ULA's Atlas V Celebrates Success x 2 NASA's Twin Probes Soar ...

[SatNews]..."The excitement of seeing the spacecraft in orbit and beginning to perform science measurements is like no other thrill..."

Most spacecraft try to avoid the Van Allen Belts, two doughnut-shaped regions around Earth filled with "killer electrons." This morning a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket carrying the Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP), the first twin-spacecraft for NASA, lifted off from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral at 4:05 a.m. EDT today.

NASA?s two heavily-shielded spacecraft were launched directly into the belts. The Radiation Belt Storm Probes are on a two-year mission to study the Van Allen Belts and to unravel the mystery of their unpredictability. This is ULA?s 7th launch of the year, the 32nd Atlas V launch and marked the 63rd launch since ULA was formed in December 2006.

"The ULA team and our many mission partners are very proud of our role in delivering the twin RBPS spacecraft to orbit to conduct research about our space weather and gather important data that impacts our everyday life on Earth,? said Jim Sponnick, ULA vice president, Mission Operations. ?The successful launch of this mission is a tribute to the partnerships with the highly skilled and professional teams from NASA?s Launch Services Program and The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.?

This mission was launched aboard an Atlas V EELV 401 configuration vehicle, which includes a 4-meter diameter payload fairing. The Atlas booster for this mission was powered by the RD AMROSS RD-180 engine and the Centaur upper stage was powered by a single Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne RL10A-4 engine.

RBSP will explore space weather?changes in Earth's space environment caused by the sun?that can disable satellites, create power grid failures, and disrupt GPS service. The mission also will allow researchers to understand fundamental radiation and particle acceleration processes throughout the universe.

"Scientists will learn in unprecedented detail how the radiation belts are populated with charged particles, what causes them to change and how these processes affect the upper reaches of the atmosphere around Earth," said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate at Headquarters in Washington. "The information collected from these probes will benefit the public by allowing us to better protect our satellites and understand how space weather affects communications and technology on Earth."

The two satellites, each weighing just less than 1,500 pounds, comprise the first dual-spacecraft mission specifically created to investigate this hazardous regions of near-Earth space, known as the radiation belts.

These two belts, named for their discoverer, James Van Allen, encircle the planet and are filled with highly charged particles. The belts are affected by solar storms and coronal mass ejections and sometimes swell dramatically. When this occurs, they can pose dangers to communications, GPS satellites and human spaceflight.

"We have never before sent such comprehensive and high-quality instruments to study high radiation regions of space," said Barry Mauk, RBSP project scientist at the Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland. "RBSP was crafted to help us learn more about, and ultimately predict, the response of the radiation belts to solar inputs."

The hardy RBSP satellites will spend the next 2 years looping through every part of both Van Allen belts. By having two spacecraft in different regions of the belts at the same time, scientists finally will be able to gather data from within the belts themselves, learning how they change over space and time. Designers fortified RBSP with special protective plating and rugged electronics to operate and survive within this punishing region of space that other spacecraft avoid. In addition, a space weather broadcast will transmit selected data from those instruments around the clock, giving researchers a check on current conditions near Earth.

"The excitement of seeing the spacecraft in orbit and beginning to perform science measurements is like no other thrill," said Richard Fitzgerald, RBSP project manager at APL. "The entire RBSP team, from across every organization, worked together to produce an amazing pair of spacecraft."

During the next 60 days, operators will power up all flight systems and science instruments and deploy long antenna booms, two of which are more than 54 yards long. Data about the particles that swirl through the belts, and the fields and waves that transport them, will be gathered by five instrument suites designed and operated by teams at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark; the University of Iowa in Iowa City; University of Minnesota in Minneapolis; and the University of New Hampshire in Durham; and the National Reconnaissance Office in Chantilly, Va. The data will be analyzed by scientists across the nation almost immediately.

LWS is managed by the agency's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. APL built the RBSP spacecraft and will manage the mission for NASA. NASA's Launch Services Program at Kennedy is responsible for launch management. United Launch Alliance provided the Atlas V launch service.

Since the inaugural flights in 2002, Atlas V and Delta IV launch vehicles have delivered more than 50 critical capabilities including vital national security missions for the U.S. Air Force and National Reconnaissance Office, science and exploration payloads for NASA and commercial imaging and communications satellites.? ?Just last week the ULA team celebrated the 10th anniversary of the first Atlas V launch,? said Sponnick. ?In the last decade, the Atlas V and Delta IV EELV systems have demonstrated outstanding success in launching our customer?s missions.??

ULA?s Atlas V and Delta IV launch vehicles provide a 33 percent cost savings over heritage launch systems and are the most commercially developed vehicles flying today with Lockheed Martin and The Boeing Company having funded 80 percent of their development.

Developed by the United States Air Force to provide assured access to space for Department of Defense and other government payloads, the commercially developed EELV Program supports the full range of government mission requirements, while delivering on schedule and providing significant cost savings over the heritage launch systems.

ULA's next launch is the Atlas V NROL-36 mission for the National Reconnaissance Office planned for September 13 from Space Launch Complex-3 at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California.

ULA program management, engineering, test, and mission support functions are headquartered in Denver, Colorado.? Manufacturing, assembly and integration operations are located at Decatur, Alabama, and Harlingen, Texas. Launch operations are located at Cape Canaveral AFS, Florida, and Vandenberg AFB, California.

Since 1998, NASA?s Launch Services Program has been based at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, and provides oversight as the designs of the rocket and mission are integrated with each other.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says his re-election might help end the political stalemate in Washington, much like "popping a blister."

In an interview with Time magazine, Obama says he expects Republicans in Congress to work more cooperatively in a second term, since his re-election would no longer be a factor.

The president says he also wants to do a better job of explaining to the public how his policies will help the economy grow. Obama claims he didn't do a good enough job selling Americans on the stimulus plan and the auto company bailout because he was so focused on acting to fix the economy.

Obama says he wants to focus on overhauling immigration laws and reducing the nation's dependence on foreign energy during a second term.

Early Abuse Weakens Adult Response to Skin Cancer - Typepad

Maternal maltreatment scores inversely relate to decrease in immune mRNA scores

Clearly growing up with abusive parents is no great shakes no matter how you look at it.

Early abuse has been correlated with later-life depression, stunted brain development, anxiety, alcohol abuse?and I?m just getting started.

But, even knowing how damaging early childhood abuse is, a study caught my eye that surprised me, and brought home abuse?s devastating potential in a new way.

For it seems as if early childhood abuse can weaken the body?s immune system and make it more susceptible to skin cancer, specifically?Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer.

Just this past June researchers published their findings in the Archives of General Psychiatry in an article entitled ?Basal Cell Carcinoma:Stressful Life Events and the Tumor Environment.?

Researchers took a 3-pronged approach.

First they studied 91 subjects with basal cell carcinoma, and administered the Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse Questionnaire [you can see a detailed peer-reviewed article on the questionnaire ?here] which?assesses parental neglect and antipathy, physical abuse, and sexual abuse up to the age of 17. This was?o discover if the patients had experienced parental abuse, and, if so, to what extent.

As a second component to the study, the researchers then assessed patients with the Life and Events Difficult Schedule, created by Brown and Harris, which is merely (as you?d figure) a measurement of the stressfulness of various life events. to found out if they had experienced a stressful event within the previous year. (?Stressful Events? qualifiers included divorce, job loss, or death of a loved one.)

Finally they biopsied the tumors and measured the tissue levels of mRNA located on the immune cells (that sounds very hyper-scientific and fancy, but fundamentally mRNA just means?Messenger RNA, which is a form of RNA that codes for amino acids. This measurement ?indicates immune response to the BCC tumors, and it seems we can all wrap our heads around that.).

Armed with that their scales and immunology reports, the researchers looked for an interaction between parental abuse and a stressful life event in the year preceding in order to predict immune response to the BCC.

And, sure enough, the relationship existed. Let them factor out age, gender, history?of depression?even current depression?those who had had a stressful life event within the past year, if that was confounded by emotional mistreatment by a parent, they had a significantly poorer immune response to the tumors than those who ?just? got a lousy hand the year before.

They write,

?Among BCC patients who had experienced a severe life event within the past year, those who were emotionally maltreated by their mothers (P?=?.007) or fathers (P?=?.02) as children had a poorer immune response to the BCC tumor. Emotional maltreatment was unrelated to BCC immune responses among those who did not experience a severe life event. Depressive symptoms were not associated with the local tumor immune response.?

Maternal maltreatment scores inversely relate to decrease in immune mRNA scores

It?s a breakthrough study, because if emotional maltreatment at any early age can affect ?BCC?well, then, what cancers?can?t it effect, some much more difficult to manage to BCC?

David Spiegel, M.D., associate chair of psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine and a psycho-oncologist, told Psychiatric News,

?while basal cell carcinoma is a relatively benign cancer, there is increasing evidence that immune function is crucial in cancer surveillance, especially in regard to the growth of metastases.?

But as in so many studies that find fascinating answers to cleverly posed questions, we?re left here again with an unanswerd question that lies at the very base of all this work and the fascinating findings.

We have progressed light years in our treatment of cancers and our approach to tumors?but a paper like this indicates that undercutting the best of care is the patient?s early years, spent denigrated, demeaned, disheartened.

What, I?d like to pose to the?National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Gilbert and Kathryn Mitchell Endowment, who so generously study, what do we do now, knowing how damaging early maltreatment is?

We don?t need a medicine or a charm or a drug company working over-time to develop something new; we need a systemic change in how parents treat their children, and how we as a society put up with those adults who mis-treat their children.

Is it possible that all the billions of dollars poured into cancer research each year will never achieve all we hope for?because, at the core of the family unit, there is a dissolution that precludes future health?

And, if so, who will put up the funding, and who will dedicate their lives to the research, to making childhood a safe and protected place for our children to inhabit?saving them from multiple diseases down the road, and improving their immunity enough so that they?ll have a fair fight, should cancer beckon them under its devastating wing?

Saturn changes color with the seasons

NASA / JPL-Caltech / SSI

Saturn and its rings provide a backdrop for the planet's largest moon, Titan, in a true-color picture captured by NASA's Cassini orbiter on May 6.

By Alan Boyle

Saturn's shades of blue and butterscotch are changing along with the planet's seasons, as illustrated by a fresh batch of true-color photos from the bus-sized Cassini orbiter.

When Cassini arrived at Saturn, seven years ago, the planet's northern hemisphere had a tint of azure blue. Since then, Saturn has gone through an equinox and a significant shift in seasons. Summer is approaching in the north, and winter is coming to the south.

The seasonal change means ultraviolet radiation is intensifying in the north, resulting in an increasing amount of yellowish haze.?Meanwhile, there's a reduction in radiation hitting the southern hemisphere, and the haze is clearing as a result. The presence of the ring shadow enhances the effect in Saturn's south.

"The reduction of haze and the consequent clearing of the atmosphere make for a bluish hue: the increased opportunity for direct scattering of sunlight by the molecules in the air makes the sky blue, as on Earth," Cassini's imaging team reports in today's advisory. "The presence of methane, which generally absorbs in the red part of the spectrum, in a now-clearer atmosphere also enhances the blue."

Although Saturn has seasons like Earth's, the fact that a Saturnian year lasts 29.5 times longer than an Earth year means that the southern hemisphere's winter solstice won't occur until May 2017. And if Cassini's mission managers have their way, the orbiter will be around to see it.

"The Cassini mission was recently given rave reviews by a panel of planetary scientists and NASA program managers for its contributions to our understanding of the solar system, a circumstance that bodes well for a well-funded continuing mission over the next five years," the imaging team's leader, Carolyn Porco of the Colorado-based Space Science Institute, reported in an email today. "Despite the fact that we can't know exactly what the next five years will bring us, we can be certain that whatever it is will be wondrous." ?

Saturn's largest moon, Titan, takes center stage in one of Cassini's newly released views. The moon measures 3,200 miles (5,150 kilometers) across and is covered with its own brand of hydrocarbon-rich haze. Titan is the only moon in the solar system to have an opaque atmosphere. Cassini snapped the picture you see above from a distance of about 483,000 miles (778,000 kilometers).

Here are more pictures that show Titan's true colors:

NASA / JPL-Caltech / SSI

Saturn's rings obscure part of Titan's disk in an image from NASA's Cassini orbiter. Parts of the rings appear dark near the center of this view because of the shadow cast by the planet. This image was obtained on May 16 at a distance of about 1.9 million miles (3 million kilometers) from Titan.

NASA / JPL-Caltech / SSI

Titan's recently formed south polar vortex stands out in this natural-color view of Titan from the Cassini spacecraft. The vortex may be related to the approach of southern winter and the development of a polar "hood" of denser, high-altitude haze. This picture was acquired on July 25 at a distance of about 64,000 miles (103,000 kilometers).

NASA / JPL-Caltech / SSI

NASA's Cassini spacecraft looks toward the night side of Titan and sees sunlight scattering through the periphery of the moon's atmosphere, creating a ring of color. The picture was taken on June 6 from a distance of about 134,000 miles (216,000 kilometers).

More colors from Cassini:

Motorola RAZR M 4G LTE details slip out

15 hrs.

On Sept. 5,?Motorola and Verizon are holding an event at which?they're expected to announce the latest RAZR device. Thanks to an anonymous source, the cat's out of the bag about the new smartphone's?details.?

It will apparently be called the Motorola RAZR M 4G LTE.

Engadget's Brad Molen reports that the tech blog's staff has gotten its hands onto some photos of the awkwardly named device, along with its spec sheet.

The RAZR M will have a 4.3-inch qHD (960 x 540) Super AMOLED Advanced display, a dual-core Snapdragon processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB of internal storage (which can be expanded, thanks to microSD support), an 8MP camera in the rear, a 3MP camera in the front, and NFC?capabilities.

No details about the device's expected price or release date are known at this point, so at least there'll be something new?that we can learn from the Sept. 5 event.

Low favorability trails Romney up to the convention dais

Mitt Romney accepts the Republican nomination for president this week with the lowest personal popularity of any major-party nominee in polls dating to Ronald Reagan's presidency, a difficulty for Romney that's persisted throughout this election cycle.

Forty percent of registered voters in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll see Romney favorably overall, while 51 percent rate him unfavorably - 11 points underwater in this basic measure, with a majority unfavorable score for just the second time in polls since last fall.

See PDF with full results, charts and tables here.

Barack Obama does better in this poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates, but hardly well - 50-47 percent in favorable vs. unfavorable views among registered voters, essentially the same as his 2012 average in ABC/Post polls. On this, as on other measures, as hard as they've campaigned, views of the two hardly have budged.

Romney's favorability rating is the lowest of any major-party nominee at roughly the time of his convention in available data back to 1984; indeed he's the first, at this stage of the campaign, to be rated more unfavorably than favorably by a significant margin. On the other hand, Obama's net favorable rating is substantially lower than the four previous incumbents' (Reagan, both Bushes and Bill Clinton) at this point.

One previous candidate in this period had a favorability rating as low as Obama's and went on to win the presidency - George H.W. Bush in 1988. (Bush's unfavorability rating was lower than Obama's, with more undecided.) None has won with favorability as low as Romney's, increasing the pressure for him to develop more of a personal connection with the electorate, perhaps starting with his acceptance speech Thursday night.

Favorability is a broader concept than simple likeability, a measure in which Obama far surpasses Romney; it also reflects empathy, a sense that the candidate understands the problems of average Americans - an attribute on which Obama also leads, but more narrowly. Analysis of ABC/Post data this week shows that when likeability and empathy are tested together, empathy is a far more powerful predictor of vote choices.

GROUPS - Romney has particular challenges in some groups: His 34 percent favorability rating among women who are registered to vote is down by 9 percentage points from May, with particular weakness among unmarried women, a core Democratic group.

Romney is seen favorably by just 35 percent of independents who are registered to vote, numerically a low since March (albeit not significantly different from its level earlier this month). Obama's favorability rating among independents is 9 points higher than Romney's; nonetheless in a separate ABC/Post poll released Monday the two were about even among independents in vote preference, 47-43 percent, Romney-Obama, indicating that favorability is one factor in candidate support, but not in and of itself determinative.

Romney's rating also is notably low, just 21 percent favorable, among adults who say they're not registered to vote - a sentiment that would explain a focus on voter registration by the Obama camp in the two months ahead.

Romney does far better in his core ideological support groups, but with shortfalls compared with Obama. Romney is seen favorably by 69 percent of conservative voters; Obama, by 81 percent of liberals. And Obama's rating among moderates, 61 percent favorable, far exceeds Romney's in this group, 29 percent.

A variety of factors may inform these ratings; both candidates likely are low on favorability not solely because of their own doing, but because the public is in a sour mood, pinched by the long-running economic downturn. Nonetheless, while they focus in the weeks ahead on winning voters' minds, a few hearts wouldn't hurt.

METHODOLOGY - This ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted by landline and cell phone Aug. 22-26, 2012, among a random national sample of 1,020 adults and 814 registered voters. Results have a margin of sampling error of 3.5 points for the full sample and 4 points for the sample of registered voters, including design effect. The survey was produced for ABC News by Langer Research Associates of New York, N.Y., with sampling, data collection and tabulation by SSRS/Social Science Research Solutions of Media, Pa.

  • Two-and-a-half hours of light exercise a week can suppress inflammation in the body ? which is believed to contribute to heart disease
  • The exercise simply has to raise the heart rate to be of benefit
  • People of all ages can improve their health by working on a DIY or gardening project every week

By Jenny Hope? Daily Mail? PUBLISHED: 22:54, 13 August 2012

?

Stepping up exercise levels in your 50s is likely to cut your chances of suffering a heart attack in later life.

Only two-and-a-half hours of moderate activity a week appears to suppress inflammation in the body which is believed to contribute to heart disease, a long-term study has found.

It means that, even for the middle aged who have been inspired by the exploits of athletes during the Olympics, it is never too late to exercise and change their future health for the better.

Never too old: The findings mean that all age groups benefit from doing some form of exercise on a weekly basis and reduce their risk of a heart attack

And it is not necessarily only vigorous training or sports that offer these protective benefits, the researchers said.

The exercise simply has to raise the heart rate ? and includes leisure activities such as gardening, DIY and brisk walking.

The link between exercise and improved heart health is already well-known. But the latest research, by British Heart Foundation-funded scientists, is the first major study to confirm that the likely mechanism is its anti-inflammatory effects, they said.

Middle-aged participants who got off the sofa and became active were found to have lower ?inflammatory markers? in their blood at the end of the ten-year study.

Inflammation levels remained lower in those approaching and living in retirement who were physically active compared with those who did relatively little, it found.

Lead study author Dr Mark Hamer, associate professor of epidemiology and public health at University College in London, said: ?Our study reveals for the first time the long-term effects of leading an active lifestyle on inflammation and heart disease.? He added: ?Previous studies looking at how exercise protects the heart have only been carried out for short periods of time.?

Heart and circulatory disease causes one in three of all deaths in the UK ? about 191,000 deaths each year ? at a cost of ?30billion to the economy.

There are nearly 2.7million people suffering from coronary heart disease in the UK, according to the British Heart Foundation.

The study of more than 4,000 civil servants ? whose average age was 49 years when the research began ? compared their exercise? routines and levels of inflammation as a means to gauge heart health.

?Inflammatory markers are important because we have shown they are a key mechanism explaining the link between physical activity and the lower risk of heart disease,? Dr Hamer explained.

French banks investigate potential breach of U.S. sanctions

PARIS (Reuters) - French banks BNP Paribas (BNP) and Credit Agricole are conducting internal inquiries into U.S. dollar payments to check whether they are potentially in breach of American sanctions, the banks said on Monday.

Neither would confirm whether the inquiries concerned U.S. sanctions against Iran, which have led to investigations at rival banks such as UniCredit and RBS and have already cost Standard Chartered a hefty fine.

"We are conducting an internal review," said a spokesman for BNP, citing a disclosure from its 2011 annual report that said the probe concerned "certain U.S. dollar payments involving countries, persons and entities that could be subject to U.S. sanctions", adding that the bank had spoken to American regulators.

Credit Agricole, which used similar wording in its own annual report, is also reviewing payments linked to countries and entities potentially subject to U.S. sanctions, a spokeswoman said. "The review is ongoing," she said.

Societe Generale, France's No.2 listed bank, does not refer to any such review in its own annual report. The bank stopped all operations with Iranian entities from February 2012 and has returned its banking license to the central bank of Iran, a spokeswoman said. Mites could give competitors on Survivor a run for their game-show money.

Two of the tiny creatures, trapped in fossilized tree resin, smash the record for ancient amber-preserved arthropods, a group of critters that includes beetles, butterflies, spiders and shrimp. At 230 million years old, the mite fossils are about 100 million years older than previous finds, and suggest that mites? basic body blueprint may be built to outwit, outplay and outlast.

?Dinosaurs have come and gone, but mites have hardly changed,? says David Grimaldi of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. ?Their body form is quite similar to what we see in gall mites today.?

That similarity is somewhat surprising considering that the Earth was profoundly different 230 million years ago, when most plants were ferns, the Atlantic Ocean didn?t exist and pterosaurs cruised the skies. The Triassic-period mites, however, look just like their present-day relatives: They have segmented bodies, piercing mouthparts and legs bristling with ?featherclaws,? Grimaldi and his colleagues report online August 27 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. ?

Mites seem to have made major adaptations, however, to their food supply. Unlike modern gall mites, which feast mostly on flowering plants (sometimes forming bumpy growths on the leaves), the Triassic ones chowed on a more primitive type of greenery: conifers. Grimaldi?s team discovered the two new species of mites, one Triasacarus fedelei and the other Ampezzoa triassica, smothered in droplets of amber from a now-extinct species of cone-bearing tree. The amber also held the remnants of a fly.?

The golden globules are about the size of a grain of rice. The creatures are visible only through a microscope as tiny flecks that mar the fossilized resin?s clarity. ?You can see these little critters in all their lifelike glory ? it?s really quite amazing,? says paleoentomologist Michael Engel of the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

Limestone and shale can also hold arthropod fossils, but amber allows researchers to take a more intimate look. ?The detail preservation in these mites is leaps better than other Triassic arthropods,? Engel says. ?Actually, leaps is an understatement. The difference in preservation is a massive chasm.?

The team picked through ancient sediments in the Dolomite Alps of northeastern Italy in search of resin dollops, then took two years to examine 70,000 amber droplets, shards and fragments. Only three housed arthropods. ?With this discovery, we?re obviously all hot and ready to go back and screen through lots more,? Grimaldi says.

Arthropods are the most diverse group of creatures on Earth, making up more than 50 percent of all known species. They?re one of the key lineages of life, says Engel. ?Anything we can do to better understand what led to their successes and failures can tell us how they shaped the planet in the past and how they?re shaping the planet today,? he says.

(AP) ? A huge explosion rocked Venezuela's biggest oil refinery and unleashed a ferocious fire on Saturday, killing at least 39 people and injuring more than 80 others in one of the deadliest disasters ever to hit the country's key oil industry.

Balls of fire rose over the Amuay refinery, among the largest in the world, in video posted on the Internet by people who were nearby at the time. Government officials pledged to restart the refinery within two days and said the country has plenty of fuel supplies on hand to meet domestic needs as well as its export commitments.

The explosion shattered walls of nearby shops, ripped out windows from homes and left the surrounding streets covered with rubble and twisted scraps of metal.

President Hugo Chavez declared three days of mourning and ordered an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. "This affects all of us," Chavez said by phone on state television. "It's very sad, very painful."

Vice President Elias Jaua, who traveled to the area in western Venezuela, said on state television late Saturday that at least 39 people were killed by the explosion, up from the earlier death toll of 26. He said that the dead included 18 National Guard troops and that six of the bodies had not yet been identified. Other officials said earlier that the dead included a 10-year-old boy.

In a neighborhood next to the refinery, shopkeeper Yolimar Romero said she was at her computer when a shock wave swept over the area shortly after 1 a.m.

"At that instant, the whole house shook as if it were an earthquake," she said. "The windows went flying off with their frames and everything."

Electricity was knocked out, leaving Romero in the dark and her house filled with smoke. She found a flashlight and started looking for her husband and three children.

Outside on the street, the family saw scattered hunks of brick walls and ruins of a National Guard post and about 20 other homes. Bodies were being pulled from buildings down the street.

At least 86 people were injured, nine of them seriously, Health Minister Eugenia Sader said at a hospital where the wounded were taken. She said 77 people suffered light injuries and were released.

Flames reaching nearly 100 feet into the night air still crackled almost 20 hours after the explosion occurred, giving off searing heat felt by the residents of the neighborhood located approximately 1,000 feet from the refinery.

"This does not seem to be getting any better, I see and feel more and more flames," said Francisco Rojas, a 29-year-old taxi driver from the neighborhood as he loaded some of his belongings into a truck.

"I have a young daughter and my wife, and we don't want to take the risk of dying here," Rojas added.

Officials said firefighters had largely controlled the fire at the refinery on the Paraguana Peninsula, where flames were still visible on Saturday night after billowing dark smoke all day.

The blast occurred about 1:15 a.m. when a natural gas leak created a cloud that ignited, Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez said.

"That gas generated a cloud that later exploded and has caused fires in at least two tanks of the refinery and surrounding areas," Ramirez said.

Images shortly after the explosion showed the flames casting an orange glow against the night sky, and injured survivors on a stretcher and in a wheelchair. The bloodied bodies of victims were loaded onto pickup trucks.

Ramirez said a panel of investigators was being formed to determine the cause of the gas leak. A prosecutor was appointed to lead the investigation and troops were deployed to the area.

While the cause of the disaster remains unclear, some oil workers and critics of Chavez's government have recently pointed to increasing numbers of smaller accidents and spills as an indication of problems within the state-run company.

"We warned that something was going to happen, a catastrophic event," said Ivan Freites, secretary general of a 1,200-member union of oil and natural gas industry workers in Falcon state where the refinery is located. He spoke in a telephone interview from an area near the refinery, where he could see the flames raging in the distance.

The refinery complex's general manager, Jesus Luongo, denied that a lack of maintenance was to blame, saying in the past three years more than $6 billion has been invested in maintaining the country's refineries.

Ramirez said the explosion hit an area of storage tanks, damaging nine tanks.

"All of the events happened very quickly," Ramirez said. "When we got here in the middle of the night, at 3 or 3:30 in the morning, the fire was at its peak."

The oil minister said that supplies of fuel had been cut off to part of the refinery and that firefighters were using foam to extinguish the flames in one of the remaining tanks.

"This regrettable and sad event is controlled, is under control," Ramirez said on television, while plumes of smoke continued to billow.

Amuay is part of the Paraguana Refinery Complex, which also includes the adjacent Cardon refinery. Together, the two refineries process about 900,000 barrels of crude per day and 200,000 barrels of gasoline. Venezuela is a major supplier of oil to the U.S. and a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

Ramirez said the state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA should be able to "restart operations in a maximum of two days."

"We want to tell the country that we have sufficient inventories of fuel. We have 10 days of inventory of fuel," Ramirez said. He said the country's other refineries were operating at full capacity and would be able to "deal with any situation in our domestic market."

An official of the state oil company, known as PDVSA, said the country also has enough supplies on hand to guarantee its international supply commitments. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

In terms of international oil markets, the disaster is not likely to cause much of a ripple, said Jason Schenker, an energy analyst and president of Austin, Texas-based Prestige Economics LLC. Noting that other refinery accidents and shutdowns regularly occur around the world, he said: "There's likely to be relatively limited impact on global crude or product pricing."

"The real tragedy," he said, "is that these events continue to happen, not just in Venezuela but everywhere. It is a dangerous business."

Gustavo Coronel, an energy consultant and former PDVSA executive, called the tragedy "probably the worst one the oil industry has had in many years."

"Accidents happen, of course, although the problem with PDVSA is the inordinate amount of accidents that have taken place during the last years," Coronel said. Considering the overall record, "we are not talking about bad luck but about lack of maintenance and inept management," he said.

The labor leader Freites, who has worked at the refinery for 29 years, said workers had repeatedly alerted state oil company officials to problems that they feared could lead to an accident. "We've been complaining about problems and risks, including fires, broken pipes and a lack of spare parts," Freites said.

One opposition group comprised of former PDVSA employees, Gente del Petroleo, or Oil People, said it could not yet pass judgment on the cause of the explosion. But it but noted there had been ample concerns about lack of maintenance and poor management.

The group said in a statement that since 2003, 79 other serious accidents have been reported at the Paraguana Refinery Complex, collectively killing a total of 19 workers and injuring 67 others.

Opposition leader Henrique Capriles, who is challenging Chavez in the country's Oct. 7 presidential election, expressed condolences to the victims and their families.

"We Venezuelans are one, and we grow in the face of this type of situations," Capriles said.

Tips for Moms and Dads During Pregnancy | Family Information on ...

It is important to see a doctor once you have a pregnancy test that is positive. It is recommended that for the first trimester, you see your practitioner once a month. Typically, most women are seen between 8 and 10 weeks gestation. At this time, blood work is done and your urine is checked for protein and sugar.

If you think there is a chance that you may be pregnant, take a pregnancy test or go to your doctor right away. Sometimes, women wait too long to find out that they are pregnant and this can cause complications in pregnancy and prevent you from getting the proper care that you need.

If you plan on breastfeeding your baby, make sure to do your research before you give birth. Many women have their mind set on breastfeeding and then have no idea how to do it when the time comes. You can get advice through breastfeeding classes at local hospitals or buy books that give you techniques.

Talk to your friends and family, especially those that have been pregnant, or are currently pregnant. They will be able to support you and help you if you have any questions or if you need anything. Those who have been through it before can be some of the best resources you have.

Exercising when you are pregnant is a wonderful choice to make. You want to start out early in your pregnancy, and remain consistent. This will help you lower your risk of a miscarriage, and can also help shorten how long you are in labor, as well as reducing the risk of having any complications.

To help you sleep better while you are pregnant, plan your fluid intake around your smaller bladder capacity. Make sure you get enough water to drink during the day, but slow down after dinner and stop entirely before bedtime. This will help reduce the need to get up during the night to use the restroom.

Talk to your doctor before you plan any traveling while pregnant. This way, you can know that it?s safe to travel, and your doctor will be able to warn you about any special precautions you should take. Bring prenatal medical records with you, however, just in case anything should happen.

Make sure the water you?re drinking during your pregnancy is safe. Tap water may contain fluoride and lead, while bottled water may contain the same impurities as well as other chemicals such as BPA. Instead, invest in a tap water filter, and use a stainless steel or glass water bottle when out of the house.

To combat an upset stomach during the first trimester, try eating lots of small meals. Keeping your stomach with something in it will help keep those upset stomach issues at bay. Try to keep the foods you do eat light and fresh. Fresh fruit, vegetables and lean meats do wonders.

Have you ever analyzed the idea for this swap about? Focused internet hosting is where exactly the shopper leases your entire server and it gets high-priced. Shared internet hosting is the place nearly all corporations decide to implement the methods less than an individual server and therefore necessitates compromising the operation. In VPS internet hosting a virtual atmosphere is established by which only one bodily server is partitioned to numerous virtual devices or units every partition performing for an one devoted server.

Acquire protection upgrades for the apps of pick severe, most suitable nonetheless subscribe to their mailing listing or rss feed to remain advised. Backup in many cases. You should not depend upon your host to backup your documents inside of the celebration you possess been hacked. Remember your database(s). Does one use a business venture and also you now prefer to just take it by going online to maximise your gains but you are not sure whatever you will require? Then maintain on looking at seeing that I?ll allow you to understand how you can still get this for as very little in price level as is possible. Chances are you?ll also just like to receive an own online site web based then fine information as this information will go well with you furthermore may. In the present marketplace there may be much to settle on from when picking online site web hosting, so with this particular blog post I?ll go away you recognize exactly what the principal details are when picking web page web hosting.

To begin with should you be a little to medium measurement organisation operator you?ll require a superior quality but quite affordable word wide web host, in fact you don?t need your prospects prepared to decide to purchase from a websites but after they check out your website isn?t really functioning resulting from an inexpensive and unreliable word wide web host. Exactly the same holds valid for anybody who is just demonstrating your pastime off to pals internet when they head to your web site and it won?t present or it masses pretty slowly and gradually then the possibilities are they is not going to be browsing your site at any time once more. To stop this issue easy to understand consider a number that could be very affordable but is in addition really trusted. If you are hunting to host a private online site or perhaps a small-scale to medium dimension opportunity then I might propose you making a choice on a shared internet hosting method. Although, there is certainly plenty of to decide on from, so the way you know which an individual will go well with you? Here is where exactly I are available.

Shared web hosting is essentially you are sharing a server to host your information with other people, really don?t feel concerned while you will not have the capacity to see their documents they usually wont be ready to see yours. Shared web hosting is undoubtedly an highly affordable technique for gaining your merchandise or internet site out to an incredible number of prospective of shoppers for under a little number each and every month. If you should have only a little websites therefore you prefer to site regarding your enthusiasm or perhaps indicate your interest off to colleagues you then will need a web hosting alternative which is reasonably-priced and solid, similar applies when you have a company and you also desire to market an item.

But you shouldn?t countless hosts present unrestricted bandwidth and disk house with shared internet hosting? Sure, without a doubt some do. But bear in mind, disk area and bandwidth are usually not just like RAM and CPU use, that will have got to be capped to make sure that the server?s security. This implies that the blog is probably going not heading to load as very quickly or be as responsive as over a focused server. It?s very true for webpages that depend intensely on scripting and queries to your database. Not all sites are produced similarly. Some static net pages make use of awfully couple of assets to host and provide, other people require a whole lot. Great hosts will migrate your internet site between very different servers to guarantee you could be having the general performance you require. Also, great hosts isn?t going to altogether fill a server, fairly cap it in an a number of proportion.

Researchers spot apes fashioning advanced tools

A pair of bonobos have a knack for stone drills, shovels, and other tools, suggesting that humanity's last common ancestor with the chimplike animals were also toolmakers.

The great apes known as bonobos can make stone tools far more varied in purpose than previously known, reaching a level of technological competence formerly assigned only to the human lineage, according to researchers.

These findings may shed light on the mental capabilities of the last common ancestor of humans and these apes, scientists added.

Bonobos are, with chimpanzees, humanity's closest living relatives. Together bonobos and chimps are part of the group Pan, just as modern humans and extinct species of humans make up the group Homo.

Chimpanzees are well-known tool-users, capable of fashioning spear-like weapons from branches for hunting and using stones as hammers and anvils in the wild. Although bonobos in the wild are not known for tool use, in captivity they have shown remarkable capabilities with stone tools. For instance, in the 1990s, researchers taught the male bonobo Kanzi and the female Pan-Banisha how to knap flint -- that is, strike the rocks together to create tools -- and use the resulting stone flakes to cut rope to open a box and to cut leather to open a drum for food.

Now scientists reveal that in the intervening years, by practicing on their own, Kanzi and Pan-Banisha have developed a broader stone tool kit for more complex tasks, making them at least a match with chimpanzees in tool use.

The researchers challenged Kanzi and Pan-Banisha to break wooden logs and to dig underground, tests similar to tasks the apes might have to carry out to get food in the wild. To break the logs -- an act similar at cracking open bones to get at marrow -- the scientists not only saw these apes use rocks as hammers or projectiles to smash their targets, but also observed them either rotating stone flakes to serve as drills or use the flakes as scrapers, axes or wedges to attack slits, the weakest areas of the log. To root into hard soil, these bonobos used both unmodified rocks and a variety of handmade stone tools as shovels.

The stone tools Kanzi and Pan-Banisha created match the main categories of the first known stone tools from the ancestors of humans. Dating back roughly 2.6 million years to Ethiopia, these tools are known as the Oldowan, and include heavy-duty and light-duty items such as choppers and blades, as well as scraper-like and drill-like artifacts. Intriguingly, the marks created on the logs by the stone tools of these bonobos are very similar to those left on fossilized bones by the artifacts of early Homo.

"We anticipate that wild cultures of Pan should also exhibit such potentials and beyond," said researcher Itai Roffman, an evolutionary anthropologist at the University of Haifa in Israel.

These findings suggest humans' last common ancestor with bonobos, dating an estimated 4-7 million years ago, might also have had the mental capacity for such tool use as well, said primatologist Thibaud Gruber at the University of Zurich, who did not take part in this study.

"They use these tools for specific actions that could have been performed by our ancestors," Gruber said. "The idea here is more to find out about the cognitive abilities of our ancestors, by isolating what is common between us and our closest ape relatives. If the same ability is found in two species that share the same ancestor, as we do with the Pan species, then it is likely that the ability was already present in the common ancestor."

Gruber cautioned that Kanzi "is no ordinary bonobo. He has been having constant human contact since birth, and his cognitive abilities are not your average bonobo's."

For instance, although Roffman and his colleagues tested five other bonobos, none could create stone tools, although some did make and use wooden tools or use unmodified rocks as hammers. Also, most of the stone tools analyzed were made by Kanzi -- Pan-Banisha only manufactured a few stone tools for digging.

The fact that Kanzi used a variety of tools to break open the log sheds light on how smart bonobos can get. "That shows flexibility in the use of tools to reach a certain goal," Gruber said.

Future research can study why the five other bonobos did not create stone tools, and see if these apes could make them after interacting with Kanzi or Pan-Banisha, Gruber suggested. The idea is that how a bonobo is raised could make a difference in how successful they are at tool use.

Roffman, with Eviatar Nevo and their colleagues, detailed their findings online this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
