Google convinced the FAA to change its rules for I/O skydiving stunt

If you saw the ridiculously cool?Google Glasses stunt that sent a handful of skydivers plummeting towards the ground to deliver a special package during?the company's I/O conference keynote, you were probably just as stunned as the rest of us. As we here at Tecca watched the event unfold live, we discussed the legality of the dive and wondered how?Google got official clearance to pull it off. The answer? They had the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) change its own rulebook.

You see, the airspace around San Francisco falls under "Class B" rules, meaning pilots need written permission just to cruise around the area, much less act as a skydiving platform. According to?TechCrunch, getting clearance to fly in the area isn't particularly difficult to get, but the rules state that zeppelins ? like the airship that Google was using ? are not allowed to open their doors while in the air. But when you're one of the world's largest companies, you don't simply play by the rules... you change them.

Google worked closely with the San Jose branch of the FAA to review the current laws regarding airships and convinced them to tweak the rules enough to allow the skydivers to swing the door open and make the jump. Once the pesky legal hurdles were out the way, the stunt went off without a hitch, and will likely be remembered as one of the coolest keynote surprises for many years to come.

(AP) ? A strong explosion rocked the Syrian capital Thursday near a busy market and the country's highest court, wounding at least three people and sending clouds of black smoke into the sky.

The blast came as tensions threatened to spread across the region. Neighboring Turkey deployed anti-aircraft guns and other weapons alongside its border with Syria, nearly a week after Syrian forces shot a Turkish military plane out of the sky, Turkish state TV said Thursday.

Major world powers will meet Saturday in Geneva for talks on Syria, but few observers expect a major breakthrough. Syria has the protection or Russia, a veto-wielding member of the U.N. Security Council, and has so far been impervious to international pressure.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Thursday that Moscow will not endorse a call for Assad to give up power.

"We are not supporting and will not support any external meddling," he said. "External players must not dictate ... to Syrians, but, first of all, must commit to influencing all the sides in Syria to stop the violence."

It was not clear who was behind Thursday's blast in Damascus.

Much of the violence that has gripped Syria since the uprising began has been sanctioned by the government to crush dissent. But rebel fighters are launching increasingly deadly attacks on regime targets, and several massive suicide attacks this year suggest al-Qaida or other extremists are joining the fray.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene of the blast said some cars were charred and many had their windshields blown out.

"I did not see any wounded people, but cars and nearby shops were damaged," said Fawaz Mishhim, a witness who was in a nearby market when he heard the explosion.

Syria's state-run TV said the explosion was in the parking lot of the Palace of Justice, a compound that houses several courts. The blast happened at 1 p.m. near the capital's famous Hamidiyeh Market, an area crowded with families stocking up on food and other supplies for the weekend, which begins on Friday in Syria.

Witnesses reported hearing one blast, but state-run TV said two explosions struck the area. The report also said a roadside bomb was found but did not explode.

Syria has been hit by a wave of massive explosions in recent months, killing dozens of people. Most of the explosions targeted the security agencies of President Bashar Assad, who is fighting to end a 15-month-old uprising against his rule.

Last month, an explosion targeted a military intelligence compound south of Damascus killing 55 people. It was Syria's deadliest blast.

Elsewhere in Syria, activists reported clashes between troops and rebels and said more than a dozen people were killed nationwide. Some of the heaviest battles were in the eastern city of Deir el-Zour, activists said.

Activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed since the Syrian uprising began in March 2011.

Turkey, a former ally, has become one of the strongest critics of the Assad regime. Tensions between the two countries spiked following the downing of the Turkish plane last week.

Syria insists the Turkish military plane violated its air space on Friday. Turkey says the jet had unintentionally strayed into Syria's air space and was inside international airspace when it was brought down over the Mediterranean by Syria.

The search for two missing pilots continued in Syrian waters but hopes for their survival are dim, Turkish authorities said. The Turkish military said Thursday that research teams have found some pieces of the plane as well as equipment belonging to the pilots.

A small convoy of military trucks towing anti-aircraft guns entered a military outpost in the border village of Guvecci, which faces a Syrian military outpost, according to TRT television footage.

Several anti-aircraft guns also have been deployed elsewhere alongside the border. Some trucks were seen carrying self-propelled multiple rocket launchers, the footage showed.

Ties between Turkey and Syria have not been so low since the late 1990s, when the two countries almost went to war. Tensions ran high in the 1980s and 1990s as Turkey developed military ties with Israel and Syria sheltered Turkish Kurd guerrilla leader Abdullah Ocalan.

Now, Turkey is hosting civilian opposition groups as well as hundreds of army defectors who are affiliated with the rebel Free Syrian Army.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul was holding a National Security Council meeting on Thursday, TRT said. The meeting, attended by Cabinet members and the military's top brass, is expected to focus on tensions with Syria.

Welcome Our New Health and Wellness Coach

Welcome Our New Health and Wellness Coach

Welcome Matt Elley to the SAHM Team!

Hey Stay at Home Mums and Dads. If you have made your way to the STAY AT HOME MUM site I?m sure you are already aware of the fantastic money and time saving tips and great new ideas that can be implemented in your home. ?Not to mention all the convenient recipes and funny stories and experience shared by other mums.

My name is Matt Elley and I am Stay at Homes Mums official Health and Wellness Coach. I have been in the health and fitness industry since 2005 and have a passion for helping people achieve life changing results through an active lifestyle and natural nutritious foods. I am a highly qualified and extremely motivated Personal Trainer and for the past 10 years have made health and fitness my top priority,

My partner Milla and I have recently become proud happy parents of our first child, Avira, who is 11 weeks old today. She is so beautiful and absolutely perfect in every way. It has been the most amazing experience and I have found a deeper love than I ever thought possible.

I was blown away by the strength Milla showed throughout the pregnancy. I have heard stories of wives turning into an intolerant, crazy, green eyed monster. But apart from the odd teary moment, a mild case of baby brain (that still hasn?t ended) and one or two late night sugar binges, you wouldn?t even know she was pregnant. ?Since our little angel Avira arrived I am so happy to have seen what an amazing mum Milla has become already.

Over the past few months Milla and I have had to adapt to living on a single wage. We are realising firsthand the importance of budgeting and saving a few dollars where we can. Time is the other thing we are conscious about managing since Milla has taken on her new full time stay at home roll. Throughout my years in Personal Training I have worked with many Mums up to the arrival of their little one and then guided them back to being fighting fit afterwards and I have learned lots of invaluable tips and tricks along the way?. And I am going to share them all with you.

My aim is to educate on the importance of a healthy food plan aimed not at weight loss but to give mum and bub (and the whole family) optimal nutrition for the very best start to life. This can also lead to increased energy, regulating moods, a strong immune system and if you desire a few less KG?s. Preparation is the key to success so if you can get in the routine of preparing your meals and snacks in advance it makes it far easier to stay on track and ensure your all getting what your body requires. This can also save a lot of time and money. (the two things we all want to spend more of on our children)

Regular exercise is another important element that busy stay at home mums should try to factor into their day. Exercise has just as many mental and emotional benefits as it does physical ones. My first tip is to find something that interests you and do it with a friend or in a group. It is totally fine to start small, you just need to start. Walking, swimming, yoga, palates or a gym class. ?Even the small 10 minute gaps you might find in between feeds, nappy changing, cooking etc. can be put to use with a few simple exercises to speed up your metabolism, strengthen your pelvic floor and release good hormones that de-stress and boost your energy levels.

I?m so excited to work with STAY AT HOME MUM to bring you lots of relevant health and wellness tips and general advice to help mum and bub both look and feel amazing and live happy, healthy lives. SAHM and I will be here to support and guide you through every step of the way.

Yours in health,

Matt Elley

Holy homosexual innuendo, Batman! - battleroyalewithcheese

LGBT1

As a celebration of Martin Eden?s recent Spandex graphic novel ? that follows the first all gay super-hero team ? this is the first in a short series of features that focus on the theme of LGBT representation in comic book culture. As an overview of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender representation in comic books this article is mostly limited to the more prevalent Marvel and DC universes because of their overall ubiquity (also for the sake of brevity), though it will touch briefly on Archie comics?s Kevin Keller, Dark Horse?s Buffy, and a few other sources just for good measure. As with any issues of equal representation this has been something that has evolved over time, arguably at a slower pace than other areas of media, and it hasn?t been without it?s controversy. It?s safe to say that there exists a decent contingent of comic book fans that fall into the LGBT camp so there is a large audience that want to read about homosexual superheroes, or at least see a fair reflection of reality. It?s been a bumpy ride with some faltering, stereotype laden, steps but there has been progress from the first appearance of a homosexual comic book character to the present crop of story lines that not only depict gay friendships and relationships but that blur the boundaries of gender identity and represent the truly diverse nature of sexuality and gender expression.

US TV show Queer as Folks?s cornucopia of gay cliches heavily featured comic books as positive reinforcement for gay culture when Mikey went from office worker, to comic book store owner, to comic book co-creator with Justin in creating gay superhero Rage. Similarly Marvel?s X-Men can in general, with it?s outcast mutants and stories about discrimination, be interpreted as frequently allegorical of LGBT equality issues, or indeed the concerns of any minority (which makes Sir Ian McKellan?s turn as Magneto, in the abominable X-Men 3, succumbing to the ?cure? all the more painful given his status as an adoptive queer patriarch.)

The most relevant period of comic book history for the representation of LGBT culture is the past 20 years; approximately since Northstar?s coming out in Marvel?s Alpha Flight in 1992. Prior to this any reference to a homosexual lifestyle was only subtly hinted at through heavily veiled references due to being banned by the Comics Code Authority in the United States. When, in 1989, this ban was overturned Marvel, DC, and other US based comic distributers that are governed by the CCA were able to openly make reference to homosexuality. This didn?t stop people inferring certain relationships however, the most obvious being that of Batman and Robin.

Batman and Robin enjoying ?quality time?.

The possible relationship between Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson has been a constant interpretation for decades, one that?s difficult to argue with, indeed Batgirl was introduced in1956 in an attempt to discredit the rumours started by psychologist Fredric Wertham?s book The Seduction of the Innocent that reported that the relationship between ??Batman? and his young friend ?Robin?? was inherently homosexual. Innuendo abounds in Batman and Robin?s relationship from lying in bed together to Robin tearing a naked Batman from the shower. Let?s face it, Robin?s costume is hot pants for crying out loud and that?s to say nothing of the bastion of camp that was Batman, the 1960?s TV series staring Adam West. Further allusions exist in Wonder Woman where the all female island of Paradise that appeared in 1941 and could be interpreted as plainly lesbian, or in the relationship between Mystique and Destiny in X-Men. Destiny was introduced in Uncanny X-Men in 1981 and spent a lot of time with Mystique, but nothing was ever said about their relationship and so it wasn?t until writer Chris Claremont revealed sometime after that he had intended them as lovers.

Though Northstar is most often quoted, due to popularity, as being the first openly gay comic book character this is not the case. Prior to Alpha Flight issue #106, the storyline where Northstar actually said the words ?I am gay? and that deals with him caring for a HIV positive surrogate daughter, there was Extra?o in DC Comics 1988 series Millennium. Extra?o unlike most other subsequent gay Superheros (with the possible exception of the Rawhide Kid, a gay cowboy who attracted negative attention for largely being the butt of innuendo) was an amalgam of almost every gay male stereotype, flashy, camp, referring to himself as ?Auntie?, he was later confirmed to be HIV positive following an encounter with an ?Aids Vampire? named Hemo-Globin ? all in all he was a mixture of hilariously dated clich?s that were more than a little insulting. DC also had a couple of homosexual characters crop up in Alan Moore?s seminal classic Watchmen, which alluded to a relationship between Captain Metropolis and Hooded Justice, that Moore later confirmed in 1988, along with the lesbian Silhouette character who was murdered with her lover in their bed.

Alpha Flight issue #10 reader?s letters.

In Alpha Flight (a series centred around a Canadian team reminiscent of the Avengers) Northstar?s sexuality was rarely discussed beyond issue #106 when he outed himself in an encounter with Major Mapleleaf who was disgruntled that Northstar?s surrogate baby daughter Joanne received gushing attention from the media when his own son Michael?s death from AIDS was shunned because of his homosexuality. Marvel was commended for taking on such a poignant subject when the fallout from the spread of AIDS during the 1980s was still being felt. Northstar?s outing was handled fairly well, he didn?t feel his sexuality was particularly anyones business but he publicly acknowledged it in a bid to increase media attention to HIV and AIDS health issues, certainly a well intentioned reason. What was a shame was that it never went much beyond that issue, and for a decade Northstar?s sexuality was largely ignored. But the word was out, there was a gay superhero and Marvel was quick to point out in issue #110 that the response was over 76% positive, though that didn?t stop some people from voicing some staggeringly small minded commentary ? see the responses Marvel printed in issue #110 (left).

Around the same time as this was happening at Marvel, DC introduced it?s first transsexual character in Kate Godwin who, as Coagula, had the ability to dissolve solids and liquify solids. Kate appeared in Doom Patrol in 1993 and was a male-to-female transsexual who at first appeared as a lesbian but was later involved with male characters too making her one of the only transgendered bisexual characters to appear in comics. Concurrently in Neil Gaiman?s fantastic Sandman series attempted to redress the lack of realistic representation of trans characters with Wanda, a pre-op transexual woman, in A Game of You. Wanda was a secondary character living in the same building as Barbie, the protagonist, as well as a lesbian couple Hazel and Foxglove. Gaiman?s writing has always garnered praise for its accurate portrayal of the full range of peoples despite the largely fantastical or supernatural universes that they tend to inhabit.

Roughly speaking the next LGBT appearance of note came from DC?s Midnighter and Apollo in Stormwatch in 1998. Midnighter is endowed with bioengineered strength and speed and has a tendency for highly violent vigilante justice. Apollo has a multitude of powers including flight, strength, invulnerability, and he can create blasts of solar energy. The pair have drawn comparisons as a gay teaming of Batman and Superman ? a fact backed up by Apollo, like Superman, being dependant on the sun for his powers. Midnighter and Apollo shared the first gay kiss in a comic in 2000, and have since married and adopted a daughter Jenny Quantum, but they have attracted their fair share of criticism for the sometimes particularly harsh treatment (one storyline has Apollo raped) and constant homophobic abuse they receive from villains with Alan Moore stating that the characters are an example of a ?strange attitude? that exists towards LGBT themes and also calling them ?vicious muscle queens.?

When Northstar joined Marvel?s X-Men in 2001 he later found himself becoming a mentor for gay teen mutant. Anole, introduced in 2003, was initially conceived as a character that would commit suicide following his parents negative reaction to his sexuality, Marvel eventually altered the story owing to the controversial nature so that Anole?s family was much more accepting. Anole?s sexuality was again only alluded to rather than stated outright and it wasn?t until after Northstar?s apparent death and in seeking the advice of fellow mutant Karma, who is openly lesbian, that he was officially outed in 2006. Anole later joins the young X-Men where he was joined by Jonas Graymalkin (introduced in 2008). Graymalkin is revealed as a 200 year old mutant that was trapped underground in a state of suspended animation having been buried by his father as a reaction to his sexuality. The pair become friends with Anole providing support for Graymalkin following the treatment he received at the hands of his father and they are amongst a very small group of gay comic characters that are friends rather than lovers.

Terry Berg coming out in Green Lantern issue #137

Green Lantern?s writers attracted controversy with a storyline in 2003 where Kyle Rayner?s 17 year old assistant Terry Berg is gay bashed by three homophobes after kissing his boyfriend, David, on the way home from a club. Previously Berg, a civilian and not a superhero, had come out to Kyle revealing the crush that he had on his boss ? Kyle, completely unaware, had been bragging about his relationship not noticing the jealously coursing through Terry. What followed was a moving scene of support from Kyle who reassured Terry that he had nothing to be scared or ashamed of and the pair formed a very strong friendship.

Because of their strong friendship, Kyle feels like a protective big brother of sorts so Green Lantern?s reaction to Terry?s assault and comatose state in Hate Crime is fairly extreme and filled with anger; he tortures the whereabouts of two of the assailants from the other and then nearly beats them to death in retaliation. Though Green Lantern?s emotive reaction is hypocritically deplorable the overall message of the story attempts to promote a more tolerant attitude (not just towards sexuality but race and appearance also), Terry is horrifyingly brutalised forcing the President to make a speech calling for education, and stating that ?tolerance and understanding begins at home.?

In 2006 DC re-introduced the Batwoman series with Kate Kane (rather than Kathy) as a lesbian who had been romantically involved with Renee Montoya, an openly lesbian former Police detective who takes on the role of Question when her mentor is killed. Kate Kane is depicted as a positive female character, a kickass lipstick lesbian, and has been remarked as being the most high profile gay character in DC?s roster. Willow from Dark Horse?s Buffy the Vampire Slayer series of comics, has always been a prominent and positive lesbian presence in comics, joined by her lovers Tara and Kennedy, a fellow witch and a powerful slayer respectively.

Willow and Kennedy in Buffy Series 8.

Buffy?s Season Eight series, that expands on the story beyond the run of the original TV show, even introduced a bit of girl on girl action for the slayer herself with a short story line involving a pair of sexual encounters with fellow slayer Satsu. The initial encounter comes as a bit of a shock to Buffy, and her friends, but while she engages at least one more time with Satsu she doesn?t identify as a lesbian, just as open to sexual experimentation. Dark Horse at least had no issue with showing the characters in bed together, and dispensed with the need for hints or allusions taking a more direct and honest route in their storytelling.

The Marvel?s Young Avengers and?Runaways featuring a new generation of teenage mutants have both had gay, lesbian and transgendered characters from the outset. In?Runaways Karolina Dean is an extraterrestrial lesbian character who was betrothed to fellow alien, but from a different race, Xavin. As a Skrull Xavin has the ability to shift his form and whilst initially Karolina shows no interest in having Xavin shift to a female form for her their relationship grows and so Xavin?s sexuality is fluid, frequently moving between genders, taking a female form for the sake of his/her love for Karolina. The relationship between the pair is brilliant for its complicated gender identity issues, with the characters taking time to bring up the blurred boundaries on the pages.

Karolina and Nico discuss Xavin in Runaways.

Hulking (Teddy) and Wiccan (Billy) in Young Avengers have a less complex relationship but have been in an openly gay teenage relationship pretty much from the start, with Billy coming out to his parents in issue #7 (their reaction is overwhelmingly positive). Billy and Teddy?s relationship is probably the most well rounded example of a gay romance in comic story lines, they show a genuine care for each other that is written into the flow of the narrative rather than being tacked on or sidelined and they are naturalistic and devoid of stereotyping. It even has the levity to bring up that Wiccan should change his name from his previous Asgardian mantle when news of his homosexuality breaks ? the implication being that ?ass guardian? would be the too easy insult to follow, showing that the series is not without it?s sense of humour and awareness.

Archie Comics introduced it?s first openly gay character in 2010 with Kevin Keller appearing in Veronica issue #202 and going on to have his own solo title this year bearing his name. Kevin Keller is a model student, ardent patriot, comes from a loving family, and is all round just too damned nice for his own good. His stories range from his past, his friends, to running for class president and being on the receiving end of some small minded homophobia. As with most Archie characters Keller is a bold, colourful, enthusiastic character and he just happens to be gay ? it?s another example of sexuality just being part of a personality rather than necessarily a feature, and the comic also hammers home the idea of the importance of family, and an enthusiasm for patriotically serving your country, all strong moral stances of importance to large amounts of the American populace. Kevin Keller is somewhat saccharine and at times sickeningly cloying, but it would be disingenuous to say it?s heart isn?t in the right place.

Billy comes out to his parents in Young Avengers issue #7

Some have complained that the depiction of LGBT characters in mainstream comics has been too heteronormative, that the characters are thoroughly integrated to the extent that the focus is on being a part of a heterosexual society rather than celebrating the diversity of queer culture and on the one hand this is true. The characters and relationships depicted, particularly early on, in the Marvel and DC universes are fair and even characters but not in your face about sexuality. Let?s remember though, that comics are typically read by children so it would be a touch inappropriate for Midnighter or Apollo to openly discuss the fun they had at the bear bar the night before. With more independent comics, ones that tend to have a slightly older audience, it?s more readily available to find a comic where the sexual orientation, and LGBT culture, is more at the forefront of the story and theme ? Spandex is one of many examples. The desexualisation of the homosexual relationship is not just an issue in comic books, mainstream movie?s are just as guilty of stripping away that layer of gay characters and this is something that hopefully will change ? gay characters kissing, or lying post-coitally in bed are on the increase.

Richter and Shatterstar, two of the characters not covered here, share a kiss in X-Factor issue #45

The recent announcement of Northstar?s wedding and the outing of Green Lantern, Alan Scott in DC?s The New 52 universe story Earth 2, highlights that homosexual characters in comic books are not going away ? even if it does seem to be more gay males than lesbian and transgendered characters. While some may be disappointed at the sometimes underwhelming depiction of sexual diversity in comic story lines it can?t be argued that they don?t have a reasonably vast and established presence ? indeed there are a whole host of characters not mentioned above ? and that presence for the most part receives the same treatment as any other aspect of the narrative; inclusion and equality are all anyone can ask for. Superhero and comic book story lines represent a mirror of the world, they explore similar themes and and issues that people face everyday the only difference is that they do them in an exaggerated world of fantasy, an escapist reality, and matters of sexual orientation, race, faith, politics and health all get the bulging, colourful, lycra costumed treatment. For a comic book fan there?s nothing more believable than having characters that you can identify with and respect. Comics can be fantastic tools of empowerment, they spread the message to take pride in who you are. It is your life, and you are super.

Egypt's Mubarak reported in coma, off life support

FILE - In this Saturday, June 2, 2012 file photo, Egypt's ex-President Hosni Mubarak lays on a gurney inside a barred cage in the police academy courthouse in Cairo, Egypt. An Egyptian prison official says Hosni Mubarak?s health has taken a turn to the worst and is likely to be moved out of his prison hospital to a military facility nearby. (AP) ? Hosni Mubarak was in a coma on Wednesday but off life support and his heart and other vital organs were functioning, according to security officials.

Overnight, state media reported that the 84-year old former president, ousted in last year's uprising and now serving a life sentence in prison, suffered a stroke and was put on life support. He was transferred to a military hospital from the Cairo prison hospital where he has been kept since his June 2 conviction and sentencing for failing to stop the killing of protesters during the uprising.

His wife Suzanne was by his side in the Nile-side hospital in Maadi, a suburb just south of Cairo. The security officials said a team of 15 doctors, including heart, blood and brain specialists, was supervising the condition of Mubarak, who needed help with his breathing. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Mubarak's health scare comes at a time of heightened tension in Egypt. Both candidates in a fiercely contested presidential runoff held last weekend are claiming victory. At the same time, the ruling military council that took over from Mubarak moved to tighten its grip on power a little more than a week before they were supposed to transfer complete authority to an elected civilian administration.

The ruling generals stripped the next president of many of his powers in a declaration made just as polls closed in the runoff late Sunday night. With the decree, they gave themselves control over the drafting a new constitution and declared themselves the country's legislative power after a court last week dissolved the Islamist-dominated parliament which was freely elected about six months earlier.

The runoff pitted Mubarak's last prime minister Ahmed Shafiq against conservative Islamist Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood. The contest divided the country and their rival claims of victory could bring more of the turmoil that has rocked the country since Mubarak's ouster.

Mubarak was convicted of failing to prevent the killing of some 900 protesters during the 18-day uprising that forced him out of office on Feb. 11, 2011. He and his two sons, onetime heir apparent Gamal and wealthy businessman Alaa, were acquitted of corruption charges. But the two sons are held in Torah awaiting trial on charges of insider trading.

The two were by their father's side at the Torah prison hospital, but the officials said prison authorities refused their request to accompany him to the Maadi military hospital.

Sons of fathers with high incomes tend to end up with higher than average incomes themselves, but new research shows that it's not just dad's money that helps a son on his way.

According to a study recently published in the Journal of Political Economy, human capital endowments passed from father to sonperhaps in the form of smarts, advice, work ethic, or some other intangiblecould be more important to a son's success than the size of dad's paycheck.

"We know there's a correlation between fathers' income and sons'." said David Sims, an economics professor at Brigham Young University and one of the study's authors. "What's gotten less attention is the mechanism. We wanted to see if the intergenerational income correlation is due to moneywhat we can buy for our kidsor if human capital attributes passed from father to son play a role as well."

The problem is that separating the two inputs is tricky. On average, fathers with higher human capital endowments also tend to have higher incomes, so it's hard to tell which factor is doing what. Sims and his colleagues used a statistical model and a rich dataset to try to disentangle the two.

The authors' methodology builds on the following thought experiment. Take two smart, similarly skilled and educated fathers. Say one lived in a town with a robust labor market and he had a big salary. The other father wasn't so lucky. He lived in a town with a depressed labor market, and had much lower earnings despite his comparable human capital. If money is the only thing that matters in the intergenerational transfer of income, then we'd expect that the son of the lucky father would end up with a higher income than the son of the unlucky father. However, if human capital matters, the two sons may end up with more similar incomes.

To test this idea, the researchers used remarkably detailed government administrative data on a large sample of Swedish fathers with sons born between 1950 and 1965. The data included salary information for fathers and sons as well as clues about fathers' human capital: education levels and the nature of their occupations. Fathers with more education or those who work in jobs that require specialized skills are considered to have higher human capital endowments that could be passed to sons.

First, Sims and his colleagues looked for a raw correlation between fathers' incomes and their sons', which, as expected, was quite strong. Then they employed a statistical methodology to isolate differences in fathers' income due to something other than human capital, like in the example of similar fathers who worked in differing labor market conditions. If the income correlation weakens for fathers and sons in these types of situations, the researchers could conclude that money isn't the only thing that matters.

And that's exactly what the study found. Income differences not related to a father's human capital were weaker predictors of a son's income. In other words, human capital matters.

"We can conclude that, for the men in our dataset, differing human capital endowments passed from father to son account for about two-thirds of the overall intergenerational income relationship," Sims said. "We don't offer a final answer here, but we do offer some boundary conditions and present a methodology that could help unravel the question."

Workplace Wellness Programs to Reduce Workers' Compensation ...

Blog by: Garry Watts, CPCU, CRM

By implementing workplace health initiatives, many companies are taking proactive measures to help with decreasing health issues affecting their employees. This is particularly important because of the following:?

  • The working population is aging, with the national average around 46 years old.
  • There is a decreasing number of skilled workers, increasing the number of on-the-job injuries.
  • Obesity rates are astronomical and continue to rise.
  • There is a steady increase of inactivity among Americans.
  • Medical care costs continue to rise.
  • There is an increase in stress-related illnesses.
  • Approximately 90 percent of Americans are living with some chronic condition, such as diabetes, asthma, thyroid disorders, etc.
  • Most importantly for risk managers, non-work-related health issues directly increase the risk of work-related injuries.

?
Getting Employees Healthy

To assist your employees in getting healthy, staying healthy and consequently reduce their risk of a workplace injury or illness:

  • Create an employee safety education committee devoted strictly to health problems that correlate with injuries.
  • Teach employees how to properly investigate accidents and determine ways in which they could be prevented. This may include:
    • Ergonomics evaluations
    • Lift equipment evaluations
  • Offer personal health profile screenings for employees to identify their risk factors. This should include screenings for cholesterol, bone density, glucose, body mass index, etc.
  • Provide personalized health coaching and self-help materials.
  • Offer quarterly corporate challenges to promote weight loss and activity.
  • Offer quarterly educational safety and health seminars.
  • Consider implementing a cross-promotional safety and health program with your health care provider.
  • Provide incentives to employees who fulfill health-related goals, or remain free from injuries for an established amount of time.
  • Refer all employees who suffer a work-related injury to the wellness program coordinator for a consultation.
  • Incorporate a safety presentation in your wellness seminars.
  • Workers? compensation managers and risk managers should provide health and wellness referrals to injured employees.
  • Distribute monthly safety, health and nutrition tips to employees.

Feel free to contact us for more information and resources on how you can create an effective safety and health program.

Spain borrowing costs soar in debt auction

Spain's Economy Minister Luis de Guindos gestures during a news conference at the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness in Madrid, Spain, Saturday, June 9, 2012. Spain will ask for a bailout for banks felled by bad real estate loans, in an about-face that European officials welcomed Saturday and said could cost up to euro100 billion ($125 billlion). A rescue for Spain will be Europe's fourth since the single currency bloc's debt crisis erupted two years ago. (AP Photo/Andres Kudacki)

(AP) ? Spain paid sharply higher interest rates in a short-term bill auction on Tuesday, highlighting growing investor concerns that the country might eventually need foreign help to finance itself.

The Treasury raised ?3.39 billion ($4.28 billion) in 12- and 18-month bills ? more than its upper target of ?3 billion ? and demand was robust, but the cost skyrocketed. The interest rate on the 12-month bills rose to 5.07 percent from 2.98 percent at the last such auction on May 14. The rate on the 18-month bills soared to 5.10 percent from 3.3 percent.

In the secondary market, where issued debt is traded openly, the yield on 10-year Spanish bonds remained perilously high at 7.03 percent, down 0.10 percentage points from the previous day.

Worries about Spain's ability to repay its debt grew last week when the country agreed to accept a eurozone loan of up to ?100 billion to shore up its ailing banks, which are sitting on massive amounts of soured real estate investments.

The big fear is that, as the money will count as a loan and raise Spain's overall debt load, the country's financing costs will suffocate the government as it tries to wade its way through a money-sucking recession and a 24.4 percent jobless rate.

Marc Ostwald of Monument Securities said that while Spain met its sale target for the debt auction on Tuesday, "the yields at which these were sold can only be described as prohibitively expensive."

If investors are demanding such high rates for short-term debt, Spain needs not only a eurozone rescue package for its banks but "an outright bail-out package," Ostwald said. "It is becoming very difficult to see how it can manage without that beyond the end of the third quarter, unless yields fall dramatically!"

Markets were also rattled ahead of the auction by news that the second part of a government-ordered audit of Spanish banks has been delayed to September from late July. A separate, less thorough stress test by two companies remains due to be delivered this week, but when it will be made public is not clear.

Spain can survive the current high interest rates for weeks or even months, analysts say, but not in the longer term. If it becomes clear that the borrowing rates will not come back down, Spain will likely have to ask for a European bailout ? money that would come at lower interest rates than those offered by bond markets. The problem is that Spain's ?1.1 trillion economy is the eurozone's fourth-biggest and larger than those of bailed-out Greece, Ireland and Portugal combined.

The Spanish economy minister, attending the Group of 20 world leaders' summit in Mexico, said the country is being punished unfairly in debt markets.

"We in the government are convinced that the current situation of punishment in the markets, what we're suffering from today, doesn't correspond with the efforts, or the potential, of the Spanish economy," Luis de Guindos said Monday. "This is something that will have to be recognized in the coming days and weeks."

Spain is waiting for the two independent audits of its banks, due to be presented to the government Thursday, to determine how much of the ?100 billion eurozone rescue loans Spain will tap. Investor sentiment toward Spain will in coming days depend upon the sum of loans demanded as well as any support measures announced by European leaders.

A draft of the G-20 final statement says the world's largest economies in the developed and developing world want to stress economic growth as a way to end Europe's crisis. That stands in contrast to the current German-driven austerity drive to bring deficits down.

Analysts again seem underwhelmed by European leaders' response to the crisis.

Michael Hewson, senior market analyst at CMC Markets UK, said the rise in the Spanish 10-year bond rate this week "once again puts Europe's fourth largest economy squarely in the cross hairs as the probable next candidate for a bailout."

"Fears about growing bad debts and deposit outflows from Spanish banks have proved a toxic combination as European leaders dither on what the next steps in the crisis should be."

Spotify brings radio feature to iOS, offers streaming to non-premium users

Image

Swedish music streamer extraordinaire Spotify is updating its iOS app this morning with a key new feature. Radio, introduced late last year for the desktop version of the service, is making its way onto iPads and iPhones in the States for both premium and free users. As with its desktop counterpart, users can generate an unlimited number of Pandora / Slacker-like radio stations using artists, albums, songs and Spotify playlists. The social functionality that Spotify loves so much is intact as well, with both songs and radio stations appearing in friends' Facebook streams. And since the radio feature is available across Spotify's pages, you can make stations based on friends' playlists -- or you can just pick "Create a New Station" from the top of the Radio tab.

You can thumb up or thumb down tracks, with songs you dig populating a "Like From Radio" playlist, making those tracks accessible on different devices. Inter-device functionality also means that you can start a radio station on, say, your iPad and pick up where you left off by firing it up on your iPhone. Premium users get an unlimited number of song skips -- when asked how many skips free users get, Spotify simply told us that it would be "industry standard" (ie, the same number you get on competing services).

Asked when such functionality will be hitting Android handsets, the company told us, "we think it's core to the mobile experience, and we're looking to bring it to all of the major platforms in due time." In the meantime, iPhone and iPad owners can download the update today.

Update: Spotify dropped us a line to let us know that the update apparently isn't quite ready for prime time. Rather than actually dropping today, the latest version of the iOS app "will be available in the next few days."

Study indicates promise in Huntington's treatment

ScienceDaily (June 18, 2012) ? A new study shows that the compound Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ) reduces oxidative damage, a key finding that hints at its potential to slow the progression of Huntington disease. The discovery, which appears in the inaugural issue of the Journal of Huntington's Disease, also points to a new biomarker that could be used to screen experimental treatments for this and other neurological disorders.

"This study supports the hypothesis that CoQ exerts antioxidant effects in patients with Huntington's disease and therefore is a treatment that warrants further study," says University of Rochester Medical Center neurologist Kevin M. Biglan, M.D., M.P.H., lead author of the study. "As importantly, it has provided us with a new method to evaluate the efficacy of potential new treatments."

Huntington's disease (HD) is a genetic, progressive neurodegenerative disorder that impacts movement, behavior, cognition, and generally results in death within 20 years of the disease's onset. While the precise causes and mechanism of the disease are not completely understood, scientists believe that one of the important triggers of the disease is a genetic "stutter" which produces abnormal protein deposits in brain cells. It is believed that these deposits -- through a chain of molecular events -- inhibit the cell's ability to meet its energy demands resulting in oxidative stress and, ultimately, cellular death.

Scientists had previously identified the correlation between a specific fragment of genetic code, called 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (80HdG) and the presence of oxidative stress in brain cells. 80HdG can be detected in a person's blood, meaning that it could serve as a convenient and accessible biomarker for the disease. Researchers have also been evaluating the compound Coenzyme Q10 as a possible treatment for HD because of its ability to support the function of mitochondria -- the tiny power plants the provide cells with energy -- and counter oxidative stress.

The study's authors evaluated a series of blood samples of 20 individuals with HD who had previously undergone treatment with CoQ in clinical trial titled Pre-2Care. While these studies showed that CoQ alleviated some symptoms of the disease, it was not known what impact -- if any -- the treatment had at the molecular level in the brain. Upon analysis, the authors found that 80HdG levels dropped by 20 percent in individuals who had been treated with CoQ.

CoQ is currently being evaluated in a Phase 3 clinical trial, which is the largest therapeutic clinical study to date for HD. The trial -- called 2Care -- is being run by the Huntington Study Group, an international networks or investigators.

"Identifying treatments that slow the progression or delay the onset of Huntington's disease is a major focus of the medical community," said Biglan. "This study demonstrates that 80HdG could be an ideal marker to identify the presence oxidative injury and whether or not treatment is having an impact."

Additional co-authors include Karl Kieburtz, M.D., M.P.H. and Ryan Evans M.D. with URMC, Ray Dorsey, M.D. with Johns Hopkins University, Steven Hersch, M.D., Ph.D. with Massachusetts General Hospital, and Ira Shoulson, M.D. with Georgetown University. The study was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health. Funding for the original Pre-2Care study was provided by the CHDI Foundation.

(AP) ? France was outplayed, outfought and outscored, and that was against a team with nothing to play for.

With world champion Spain now waiting in the quarterfinals of the European Championship, things better improve quickly for the French to stand a chance of going any further.

France limped into the knockout round of Euro 2012 despite a 2-0 loss to Sweden in their final group game, showing just how much the team still needs to improve to be true contenders in the tournament. The French finished second in Group D after England beat Ukraine 1-0, and will face Spain on Saturday in the quarterfinals.

"You have to be optimistic to think that we can beat Spain, but it's hard right now to imagine that we can. We have to do better on Saturday," France coach Laurent Blanc said. "We wanted to finish top of the group but couldn't manage it, so we have to deal with that."

France's 23-game unbeaten streak came to a crashing end as the already-eliminated Swedes exposed frailties in the back four and neutralized the dual attacking threat of Karim Benzema and Franck Ribery.

The Swedes dominated proceedings for much of the game and Zlatan Ibrahimovic broke the deadlock with a piece of artistry in the 54th minute, sending a spectacular volley past helpless goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Sweden had plenty of chances to add a second before Sebastian Larsson finally did in injury time to secure the team's first points of the tournament.

"We really wanted to win this game for the fans, their support has been fantastic," Ibrahimovic said. "We wanted to finish this strongly for them."

Perhaps France can still do the same, but the team has big problems to solve in both defense and attack.

"We were too average in too many areas to hope to win this match," Blanc said. "The Swedish team played with all their hearts, they were better prepared than us. They had a player in their ranks (Ibrahimovic) who made the difference. If you analyze the game, we were in trouble for most of it.

"We're very disappointed with how we played. The main thing is that we've qualified."

England finished with seven points, while France had four and Ukraine and Sweden bowed out with three each.

France looked lackluster throughout much of the game and lacked clinical finishing when it did threaten the Swedish goal.

Substitute Jeremy Menez had France's best chance to equalize when he broke into the area in the 81st minute but his low shot was stopped by goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson's leg. From the resulting corner, Olivier Giroud headed just wide.

Benzema was largely ineffective again and remained scoreless at the tournament. Ribery had France's best chance in the first half when the ball fell to him on the left edge of the area but his shot was parried by Isaksson.

Instead, it was Ibrahimovic who stole the show with another spectacular goal to add to his resume. The tall AC Milan striker met Larsson's cross from the left and put himself nearly sideways in the air before striking the ball perfectly past Lloris.

"It was a perfect cross from Seb," Ibrahimovic said. "The whole team played a fantastic game today."

Lloris then single-handedly kept France in the game over the next few minutes as Sweden kept pressing, making point-blank saves to deny Christian Wilhelmsson and Olof Mellberg.

Larsson finally added the second by emphatically volleying a rebound into an empty net, giving the large contingent of Swedish fans a reason to celebrate.

"It's mixed emotions right now," Sweden coach Erik Hamren said. "We should be happy with the victory and the performance. ... But at the same time, there's a sense of sadness in us all because we would have wanted to stick around a bit longer."
