North Korea Shows Off Glorious New Weapons that Probably Won't Work [North Korea]

To celebrate the Immortal Perfect Rocket Glory Leadership of chubby dictator slug Kim Jung-un, North Korea threw itself a parade. Unlike, say, the Thanksgiving Day Parade, this one was mostly goose-stepping soldiers and new weapons, including a fat new ICBM. More »

Wal-Mart previews 'Disc to Digital' movie service

ROSEMEAD, Calif. (AP) ? Wal-Mart Stores Inc. previewed its "Disc to Digital" service for converting DVDs into an online library on Wednesday. Based on my experience, I'd give it a six out of 10.

That's the number of discs I was able to convert from a completely unscientific sampling of my personal DVD library.

The new service allows movie fans to walk into any Walmart, where they can present their old DVDs and get permanent access to an online version of each movie that can be streamed from a home computer or a mobile device. The DVDs are stamped with a special ink to prevent further conversion. The DVDs, however, can still be played. Each DVD conversion costs as little as $2.

Three of my four failed conversions were no surprise ? two were obscure documentaries, and one was a film from The Walt Disney Co., which is not participating in the service. One was a bit puzzling: "Water for Elephants," a fairly successful romance released last year by 20th Century Fox, one of the studios that is partnering with Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart's category director for movies, Louis Greth, said the retailer hasn't yet cleared the rights for all the titles from participating studios. That will result in some titles not being available. Some actors and directors have not agreed to sign over digital rights to movies they took part in. In the case of director George Lucas, that includes all six "Star Wars" movies.

Fox confirmed that the digital rights for "Water for Elephants" have not been cleared.

Still, with 4,000 titles available for digital conversion when the service launches nationwide on Monday, the retailer hopes to give U.S. customers another reason to come into stores. Wal-Mart also wants to take part in the shift in the way people watch movies. More and more people are choosing to watch on portable devices like Apple's iPad, and allowing people to convert their DVD libraries is seen as an important bridge to a fully portable age.

Greth called the plan "the right first step" to ease consumers into owning movies online.

Five major studios are participating in the service, which gives consumers permanent access to their movies through Wal-Mart's Vudu online movie service.

Customers must bring in the physical discs themselves and an employee will search a database to see if they are available. For $5 per disc, movies can be upgraded from DVD to a high-definition online version. Blu-ray discs converted to HD will still cost $2 each. Each disc that gets converted gets stamped with indelible ink so it can't be reused by someone else.

Vudu can be accessed through computers, Internet-connected TVs, video game consoles and by way of a special player available on iPads and iPhones. Access requires a hard-wired Internet connection or Wi-Fi.

Participating studios include Viacom Inc.'s Paramount, Comcast Corp.'s Universal, Sony Corp., Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. and News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox.

The Walt Disney Co. is developing its own online storage system called KeyChest, and is not involved in the Wal-Mart offer.

The service makes Wal-Mart part of the fledgling UltraViolet system for storing online movies. Several of the participating studios have begun to release new titles with the functionality, which allows purchased movies to be viewed through the Flixster online movie application. Fox has delayed introducing new titles on the UltraViolet standard until improvements are made.

Mike Wallace, '60 Minutes' interrogator, gave show journalistic heft and a showman's flair (+video)

Wallace?had such a fearsome reputation as an interviewer that 'Mike?Wallace?is here to see you' were among the most dreaded words a newsmaker could hear.

Within five months of each other, two of the men who helped make "60 Minutes" the most distinctive news show on television have died.

First it was Andy Rooney, the cantankerous commentator who died last November, a month after delivering the last of his show-closing essays. Late Saturday night, it was?Mike?Wallace, the hard-charging interviewer who frequently led "60 Minutes" and gave it journalistic heft with a showman's flair.

Rooney made it to age 92.?Wallace?beat him by a year, although he spent the latter stage of his life in the New Canaan, Conn., care facility where he died.

"More than anyone else he was responsible for the continuing success of '60 Minutes,' "veteran correspondent Morley Safer, a longtime colleague and frequent competitor of?Wallace's?in chasing after big stories, said on Sunday's show. "We are all in his debt."

"60 Minutes" plans an extended tribute to?Wallace?next Sunday.

Wallace?had such a fearsome reputation as an interviewer that "Mike?Wallace?is here to see you" were among the most dreaded words a newsmaker could hear.

Wallace?didn't just interview people. He interrogated them. He cross-examined them. Sometimes he eviscerated them pitilessly. His weapons were many: thorough research, a cocked eyebrow, a skeptical "Come on" and a question so direct it took your breath away.

He was well aware that his reputation arrived at an interview before he did, said Jeff Fager, CBS News chairman and?Wallace's?long-time producer at "60 Minutes."

"He loved it," Fager said Sunday. "He loved that part of?Mike?Wallace. He loved being?Mike?Wallace. He loved the fact that if he showed up for an interview, it made people nervous. ... He knew, and he knew that everybody else knew, that he was going to get to the truth. And that's what motivated him."

Wallace?made "60 Minutes" compulsively watchable, television's first newsmagazine that became appointment viewing on Sunday nights. His last interview, in January 2008, was with Roger Clemens on his alleged steroid use. Slowed by a triple bypass later that month and the ravages of time on a once-sharp mind, he retired from public life.

During the Iranian hostage crisis in 1979,?Wallace?asked Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini ? then a feared figure ? what he thought about being called "a lunatic" by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. Khomeini answered by predicting Sadat's assassination.

Late in his career, he interviewed Russian President Vladimir Putin, and challenged him: "This isn't a real democracy, come on!" Putin's aides tried fruitlessly to halt the interview.

In 1973, with the Watergate scandal growing, he sat with top Nixon aide John Ehrlichman and read a long list of alleged crimes, from money laundering to obstructing justice. "All of this,"?Wallace?noted, "by the law-and-order administration of Richard Nixon."

The surly Ehrlichman could only respond: "Is there a question in there somewhere?"

In the early 1990s,?Wallace?reduced Barbra Streisand to tears as he scolded her for being "totally self-absorbed" when she was young and mocked her decades of psychoanalysis. "What is it she is trying to find out that takes 20 years?"?Wallace?wondered.

"He was hands down the best television interviewer ever," said Steve Kroft, his former "60 Minutes" colleague. "I can't think of anyone, besides (CBS legend Edward R.) Murrow, who had a greater influence in shaping television journalism."

"60 Minutes" pioneered the use of "ambush interviews," with reporter and camera crew corralling alleged wrongdoers in parking lots, hallways, wherever a comment ? or at least a stricken expression ? might be harvested from someone dodging reporters' phone calls.?Wallace?once went after a medical laboratory offering Medicaid kickbacks to doctors in this fashion.

They were phased out after founding executive producer Don Hewitt termed them "showbiz baloney." ''Finally I said, 'Hey, kid, maybe it's time to retire that trenchcoat,'" Hewitt recalled.

Wallace's?late colleague Harry Reasoner once said, "There is one thing that?Mike?can do better than anybody else: With an angelic smile, he can ask a question that would get anyone else smashed in the face."

Fager's first contact with?Wallace?? as a young producer he had to shorten one of?Wallace's?stories for another broadcast ? left him more frightened than anything he had to do professionally to that point. Eventually, Fager became one of?Wallace's?producers and, as the top producer at "60 Minutes," the one who had to delicately convince a man who never wanted to retire that it was time to hang it up.

"I was scared of him and intimidated by him," he said. "He knew it and he would just make you more miserable. That was?Mike. He always had a twinkle in his eye, and even if you were intimidated by him, it was hard not to love him."

ABC's Diane Sawyer, a former "60 Minutes" colleague, said?Wallace's?energy and nerve set the show's pace. "He bounded through the halls with joy at the prospect of the new, the true, the unexpected," she said.

His prosecutorial style was admired, imitated, condemned and lampooned. In a 1984 skit on "Saturday Night Live," Harry Shearer impersonated?Wallace, and Martin Short played weaselly, chain-smoking attorney Nathan Thurm, who becomes comically evasive, shifty-eyed and nervous under questioning.

Wallace?was hired when Hewitt put together the staff of "60 Minutes" at its inception in 1968. The show wasn't a hit at first, but worked its way up to the top 10 in the 1977-78 season and remained there year after year. Among other things, it proved there could be big profits in TV journalism. It remains the most popular newsmagazine on TV.

Wallace?said he didn't think he had an unfair advantage over his interview subjects: "The person I'm interviewing has not been subpoenaed. He's in charge of himself, and he lives with his subject matter every day. All I'm armed with is research."

Wallace?himself became a dramatic character in several projects, from the stage version of "Frost/Nixon," when he was played by Stephen Rowe, to the 1999 film "The Insider," based in part on a 1995 "60 Minutes" story about tobacco industry whistle-blower Jeffrey Wigand, who accused Brown & Williamson of intentionally adding nicotine to cigarettes. CBS News initially cut Wigand's interview for fear of being sued.

In all, his television career spanned six decades, much of it at CBS. In 1949, he appeared as Myron?Wallace?in a show called "Majority Rules." In the early 1950s he was an announcer and game show host. In the mid-1950s he hosted "Night Beat," a series of one-on-one interviews that first won?Wallace?fame for his tough style.

After holding a variety of other news and entertainment jobs, including serving as advertising pitchman for a cigarette brand,?Wallace?became a full-time newsman for CBS in 1963.

He said it was the death of his 19-year-old son Peter in an accident in 1962 that made him decide to stick to serious journalism from then on. (Another son, Chris, followed his father and became a broadcast journalist. He anchors "Fox News Sunday" on the Fox network.)

Wallace?had a short stint reporting from Vietnam and took a sock in the jaw while covering the tumultuous 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago. But he didn't fit the stereotype of the Eastern liberal journalist. He was a close friend of the Reagans and was once offered the job of Richard Nixon's press secretary. He called his politics moderate.

The most publicized lawsuit against him was by retired Gen. William C. Westmoreland, who sought $120 million for a 1982 "CBS Reports" documentary, "The Uncounted Enemy: A Vietnam Deception," that accused Westmoreland and others of deliberately underestimating enemy troop strength during the Vietnam War.

Westmoreland dropped the libel suit in 1985 after a long trial. Lawyers for each side later said legal costs of the suit totaled $12 million, of which $9 million was paid by CBS.?Wallace?said the case plunged him into a depression that put him in the hospital for a week.

In 1996, he appeared before the Senate's Special Committee on Aging to urge more federal funds for depression research, saying that he had felt "lower, lower, lower than a snake's belly" but had recovered through psychiatry and antidepressants. He later disclosed that he once tried to commit suicide during that dark period.

Wallace?was born Myron?Wallace?on May 9, 1918, in Brookline, Mass. He began his news career in Chicago in the 1940s, first as a radio news writer for the Chicago Sun and then as a reporter for WMAQ. He started at CBS in 1951.

He was married four times. In 1986, he wed Mary Yates?Wallace, the widow of his close friend and colleague Ted Yates, who had died in 1967. Besides his wife,?Wallace?is survived by his son, a stepdaughter, Pauline Dora and stepsons Eames and Angus Yates.

Rangers spoil Ventura's managerial debut

By STEPHEN HAWKINS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:29 p.m. ET April 6, 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Ian Kinsler and the two-time defending American League champion Texas Rangers certainly don't seem affected by their disappointments.

After being unable to reach a deal on a new long-term contract before his self-imposed deadline of opening day to end negotiations, Kinsler homered, had a double and scored twice for the Rangers in a season-opening 3-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Friday.

"You come in here and you play for your teammates, you don't play for yourself. This is a very selfless team," Kinsler said. "That's something outside the clubhouse. ... My main focus is to play hard for my teammates and do what I can to win a game."

Just more than five months after they twice came within one strike of a World Series championship before losing in seven games to St. Louis, the Rangers opened the new season on a picture-perfect day - 75 degrees under blue skies - and played the game exactly how manager Ron Washington prefers.

It is a familiar and successful script.

Colby Lewis (1-0) struck out nine in his first opening day start. Three relievers then worked scoreless innings, with new closer Joe Nathan working a perfect ninth.

And the offense manufactured the needed runs against White Sox starter John Danks (0-1).

"A well-played game," said Michael Young, the longest-tenured Ranger in his 12th season. "The first inning was perfect."

Kinsler had a leadoff double in the first for Texas, before a sacrifice bunt by Elvis Andrus and a sacrifice fly by Josh Hamilton. Kinsler's homer in the third made it 2-0.

After Chicago tied the game by scoring twice in the sixth, including Adam Dunn's record-tying eighth opening day homer, Hamilton led off the bottom of the frame with a single and scored on a single by Young.

The loss spoiled the managerial debut of Robin Ventura, who before the game had his first meeting with Nolan Ryan since charging the mound 19 seasons earlier against the Hall of Fame pitcher. Ryan is now president, CEO and part-owner of the Rangers.

"We just talked. I congratulated him on the last couple of years. He's done a great job," Ventura said.

Ventura, a surprise hire by the White Sox after Ozzie Guillen went to be Miami's manager, was a 26-year-old third baseman for the White Sox when he charged the mound against Ryan on a hot August night at old Arlington Stadium in 1993. Ryan, 20 years older and in the last year of his playing career, got Ventura in a headlock and landed several blows.

The two hadn't spoken until Ryan went to the White Sox clubhouse before the opener.

As for his first game as a manager, Ventura said, "I figured we'd lose a game at some point this year."

Lewis walked only one over six innings, throwing 70 of 100 pitches for strikes. The only other Rangers pitcher with nine strikeouts in a season opener was Ryan in 1991.

"Colby threw extremely well, and it was great to get Joe out there on opening day, get the first one of a big crowd, with a one-run lead," Young said. "We knew it we'd chip away and push one more run across, we'd have a chance to win."

Alexi Ogando, an All-Star and 13-game winner as a starter last season, is back in the bullpen and struck out all three batters in faced in the seventh after Texas regained the lead and Lewis left. Nathan, the former Minnesota Twins closer, got a strikeout in the ninth.

Dunn pulled a ball into the second deck of seats in right field to start the sixth. Frank Robinson and Ken Griffey Jr. are the only other major leaguers who have eight homers in openers.

"It would've been a lot sweeter if we'd pulled it out today and we could talk about the win instead of that," Dunn said. "When I stepped in, he was ready to go. Luckily I didn't have time to think. If I had, I probably would have done something bad."

Dunn batted third in the White Sox lineup. Last year, the highly paid slugger hit .159 with only 11 homers while striking out 177 times in 415 at-bats.

Alex Rios was hit by a pitch with two outs in the White Sox sixth, and the speedster was on the run when Alexi Ramirez singled to left. Rios scored to tie it at 2.

Danks' first opening day start came in the stadium he visited often growing up in Austin about three hours away and where he always expected to pitch an opener after being drafted ninth overall by Texas in 2003. But he was traded to Chicago in December 2006, and got a new $65 million, five-year contract from the White Sox this winter.

"This was a fun game, it really was," said Danks, who struck out six with no walks in six innings. "All in all, it was disappointing to get beat, but I feel like I'm where I need to be. That's a good lineup over there. ... If I can be this good or better, it should be a good year."

NOTES: It was the sixth time Dunn had homered in the first game of the season. He twice had two homers on opening day, in 2005 and 2007 while with Cincinnati. ... The 13 strikeouts by Texas pitchers were a record for opening day. The previous record was 11, in that 1991 opener when Ryan had nine.

I got real lucky and had the opportunity to try out a whole bunch of them at the Lie Nielsen hand tool event last week. The experience was indescribable the whole experience is boring a hole in my head like i am suffering from severe withdrawal symptoms and ready to rob the bank to buy one. I dont know how i am going to go back to picking up my own hand planes again.Bill S and other Neanders, this is a WARNING.... you dont blame me if you touch one of these somewhere and you leave a hole in your pocket i can fully understand those that have.Konrad made a joke saying one of his customers called him his "crack dealer" and i had to agree. I could not leave the event, simply due to not getting enough of these planes.I would sheepishly approach Konrad and ask "errrr can i try "this" one out" to which he replied sure , he already had some hard wood set up in the vice for this purpose.

Then like a two year old at a candy store i asked "and this one" ......sure said the "crack plane dealer" come closer and fall into my trap. Just like a spider to the fly.The blades are thick and i mean real thick like i never ever seen before. I think they thicker than the sides of my stanley castings. They seated so solidly in the frog that there is no chance for any chatter. So even when the blade is dull it shaves better than my best tuned plane. The lever cap oh where do i start, its what it should be to apply a downward pressure at the right place and its width is not that of a piece of tin thickness. One i looked at where i noticed it, was i am gonna say at least 3/16 wide and perfectly mating with the blade across the entire area. No ways is that blade going anywhere. There aint no need for frog adjustment to compensate for all sorts. These planes work properly. The handles and heft man they make the process such a delight you really will give up power tools. Admitedly my opening comments to Kondrad at his "booth" were "so these i presume are for collectors because i consider them works of art". (you just gotta see the planes in the flesh they really are works of art and the wood used leaves you at a loss for words)He casually said "No most of my customers are users of them". Well that was the opening line to him asking me to try one. Now i cannot think of anything else. The feeling has claimed me like no other. If you wish to set yourself a motivating tool say something like I am gonna do x y z and when i accomplish it i will reward myself with (this) then these planes are the "IT" to use for the (this) here.So for me when i have this new addition to my existing business well and trully off the ground and meeting expectations, one of these babies is coming home with me as my bonus to self for all the effort. My fear then is that this will be a long chain in many more if it starts. The price tag is significant compared to the LV and Lie Nielsen plane ranges but not when you see the workmanship and understand what goes into making them. And all this manufacturing is taking place not that far from my doorstep.

The Roofers reviews many types of roof shingles from popular styles such as asphalt shingles and metal shingles to more specialized options such as asphalt shingles and metal shingles to more specialized option such as tile, rubber, aluminum, architectural and solar shingles. Wood shake shingle are more susceptible to leakage than composite or asphalt, because the shingles do not lock together as tightly or lazy as flat as do composite and asphalt.

This signifies another step to help establish Chicago as the most environmentally ?friendly city in the nation and engages Chicagoans in adopting responsible green practices.
? While some manufacturers incorporate a percentage of recycled content, asphalt shingles generally don?t last as long as other types of roofing and can cause heat gain, especially if your shingles are a dark colors
? Wood shakes: This attractive roofing material is often made of cedar. Look for shakes without additives, preservatives or moss inhibitors
? Although metal roofs are energy- intensive to produce, they are attractive, long-lasting, and often contain high recycled content or are easily recyclable at the end of their lifetime
? Solar roofs shingles can be manufactured by a number of different companies, but are hard to find in many retail stores.

These shingles are easy to take care of and can be easily maintained to keep the roof shingles looking new.
Flat roofing Chicago
A flat roof, as its name suggests, is horizontal roofing or nearly horizontal roofing. Flat roofs are generally easier and quicker for a roofing contractor to build and use fewer roofing materials, which could potentially save a lot of money.
Flat roofing materials need to allow for water to run off freely from very slight inclinations; tar and gravel flat roofs tend to fail in colder climates, There are various categories of roofing systems, and each systems and category has its own use. These categories include: steep slope (shingles, cedar, tiles) built up (pitch, asphalt), modified bitumen (cold process, heat applied),
This in essence means that the roofing contractor has had his work inspected regularly and that the manufacturer of the materials validates that this contractor knows how to perform all of the detail work.

A Mental Exercise For Your Personal and Professional Achievement ...

A Mental Exercise for Your Personal and Professional Achievement.
By Justin Williams
Picture a guy who had made all sorts of mistake in the past. In just a few short years accumulating over $17,000 of debt, ruining both personal friendships and love relationships, and just barely getting by professionally. Finally one day he wakes up, disgusted with decisions that he has made, and that not only did he let himself down, but also the people around him. Yup, you guessed it, that guy was me. But luckily, to my good fortune someone introduced me to mental exercise that literally changed my life! A couple years back while working as a Fitness Training in Southern California, A client of mine who happened to be a very wealthy man (business owner & real estate developer). Although, he was extremely business minded, he was also very radiant, and very easy to talk to. One day after a training session (during this period of my personal devastations), he says to me ?obviously you?re getting the work done physically, because you have a fantastic body, but what kind of exercises are you doing mentally? you seem sort of out of it lately!? At first I didn?t know how to respond to that last bit, so eventually I responded, ?I read books; I mean what other exercises are out there to train people?s minds?? Jokingly he responded, ?My friend, let me introduce you to the power of positive self-talk?. Wow, I remember that conversation as if it were yesterday! Two years later, I?m graduating with my Associates Degree this month(April 27th), I?ve already been excepted to the 3rd largest University in the America for the Fall, And my Money management is much better than it was in the past! Not to mention, I?ve met some pretty amazing friends along the way with this application of positive self-talk! Back then, my client(now mentor) explained to me that in order for this power of positive self-talk to work, it has to be used often, and that I had to be truly desirous of making a long term effectual change in one or more aspects of my life. He further explained to me, that I had to be willing to invest the time into encouraging myself, which was extremely imperative for me because there was nobody else around. He assured me that by employing power of positive self-talks in this manor I would be able to succeed in just about any field that I put my mind into. So what?s the basic idea behind the power of positive self-talk? The general principle behind the power of positive self-talk is that people are able to improve on some aspect of their lives, by concentrating and reprogramming their minds to think positive thoughts, in hopes to mentally capture and project an ideal picture of want they want for the future. By focusing on these particular points and reinforcing them repeatedly, you are able to create in yourself anticipation and expectation these changes will came pass. Quite often I like to incorporate the use of a mirror during exercising the self-talk principle. For this process, talked to yourself as you would a trusted friend. Through talking to other about this subject, along with my own preference I found that often times we find it easier to confide in ourselves than in other people. Talking into a mirror will give you sort of grounding. In the sense that you are being spoken to directly by a person you trust, forcing the accuracy of what you are promising yourself will come to pass. The Mirror technique is just one example of many techniques used to creatively engage in the exercise of self-talk, I?ll include others in later post! Positive self- talk is only one step in a long process in self -improvement, so I?m not saying that it?s a cure all and all of your problems will immediately vanish as soon as you start this mental exercise. But I can personal tell you that the power of self- talk will help to cultivate the right mindset, it will create inside of you a positive sense of anticipation, and determination to succeed! Because of the how the power of positive self- talk has affected my life, I?m strongly recommending to you to make this exercise an irrevocable part of yours!

Black Visual Archive ? Calendar | t?te-?-t?te at Rhona Hoffman

t?te-?-t?te curated by Mickalene Thomas
Rhona Hoffman, Chicago

March 29 to May 5, 2012

Rhona Hoffman Gallery is pleased to present t?te-?-t?te, a group exhibition of photographic work by Derrick Adams, Jayson Keeling, Deana Lawson, Zanele Muholi, Clifford Owens, Mahlot Sansosa, Malick Sidibe, Xaviera Simmons, Mickalene Thomas, and Hank Willis Thomas.

In January of 2012 the Friends of Education of the Museum of Modern Art, New York invited Derrick Adams, Clifford Owens, Mickalene Thomas, and Xaviera Simmons to participate in ?Conversation: Among Friends.? This discussion inspired Thomas to question ideas surrounding collaborative work, and to consider the performative process in which a conversation is transformed into a visual expression.

?

Zanele Muholi, Tinky II (2010)

t?te-?-t?te includes photography by both African and African-American artists, and asks us to consider the conceptual idea of the black body and what that means in today?s society. Mickalene Thomas is interested in the performative way in which male artists use their physical presence and body in relation to the viewer, and the way many female artists view themselves through the gaze of another (often male). Clifford Owens inverts the art historical male gaze and creates a ?black male on male gaze.? Derrick Adams responds to these ideas more abstractly in ?Communicating with Shadows,? a collection of performances in which he created enlarged, projected silhouette impressions of artists such as Joseph Beuys, David Hammons, and Adrian Piper as a means of developing a personal conversation.

In the ?Faces and Phases? series, Zanele Muholi photographed black lesbians she met through the South African townships as a commemoration and a celebration of their lives. She established relationships with her subjects based on a mutual understanding of what it means to be female, lesbian and black in South Africa today. Deana Lawson, much like Muholi, creates photographs that serve as visual testimonies of familial relationships, sexuality, and life cycles. Lawson is also interested in establishing a dialogue around the way in which these images create a cultural narrative. Often pictured within her own photographs, Xaviera Simmons simultaneously captures both truth and fiction in bright, colorful compositions. Performance artist Adam Pendleton describes her work as ?using the suggestion of performance to capture the explicit and contradictory nature of individuality. Her subject becomes herself, and also a dismembered characterization of what we?re accustomed to looking at.?

Exhibited in the lower gallery are works from Mickalene Thomas? ?Polaroid Series,? compositions of archival digital Polaroid prints which provide insight into her artistic process. As if looking through a keyhole, the images expose Thomas? subjects (many of whom are also portrayed in her prints, photographs, and paintings) as she herself would have seen them. The groupings, notes, and various arrangements not only articulate the intimate conversations between artist and subject, but also reveal the selection process by which Thomas creates her narratives.

Mickalene Thomas earned her MFA from Yale University in 2002, and participated in the Artist-in-Residence program at the Studio Museum in Harlem from 2002-2003. Susan Powell's father-in-law skipped work at time of disappearance

NBC News

Susan Powell, seen in this undated photo, disappeared from the Salt Lake City area in Dec. 2009.

The tragic saga of a woman who disappeared two years ago in Utah and her husband who later killed himself and their two young sons in Washington State continued to unfold this week with even more puzzling details.

Adding yet another wrinkle to the story, the Salt Lake Tribune learned Tuesday that Josh Powell?s father, Steven Powell, called in sick to work for two days a day after his daughter-in-law Susan Powell disappeared in Dec. 2009. He worked for the Washington State Correctional Industries at the time, selling furniture made by inmates.

The days Steven Powell took off coincide with when Josh Powell rented a Ford Focus and drove it 800 miles before returning it, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

West Valley City police in Utah would not comment on the absence, but said? investigators believe Steven Powell may have had a role in the disappearance, KING 5 TV in Seattle reported. Susan Powell's body has not been found.

At the time of the disappearance, Josh Powell told police officers that she had run off from a midnight family camping trip. He later moved their two young sons to Washington State, where his father lives.

And then the story exploded. In early February, during a supervised visit with his sons in Puyallup, Wash., near Tacoma, Josh Powell hacked at them with a hatchet and blew up their home. All three died.

Details started pouring out: Susan Powell had written a letter to family and friends, which she had stored at a bank near their home, warning that if she died, it might not have been an accident. Blood was found in the family home. A search warrant revealed that Josh Powell had given police his wife?s cell phone with the memory card removed. The children had started to talk to people about their mother, but then had been promptly shut up by their father.

Steven Powell is currently serving a sentence for possession of child pornography and for secretly videotaping women and girls. He has not cooperated with police in this investigation.

Josh Powell took the lives of his two sons in a house fire. Powell was a 'person of interest' in his wife's 2009 disappearance. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

Last week, Mark Lindquist, the Pierce County prosecutor in Washington State, said that he did not believe that Steven Powell was involved, according to KING 5. He did, however, say that he would have charged Josh Powell with murder given the evidence that has come out in the last two months.
