US Census Bureau posts its first API, allows smartphone apps for the stat-obsessed

US Census Bureau posts its first API, allows smartphone apps for the statobsessed

As much as the US Census Bureau has worked to embrace the digital space, its sea of data has been largely locked away from developers not keen on doing much of the heavy lifting. As of late last week, however, there's now a public app programming interface (API) for quickly putting all of that knowledge to work. Both mobile and web apps can hook into either the complete 2010 census or the 2006-2010 American Community Survey, bringing in basic demographics as well as more complicated subjects such as commuting habits and education. The Bureau sees the API leading to not just a more informed public, but to smarter government as well -- imagine a state government that knows the income levels by county through a custom smartphone app. Budding statistics hounds can request a key for API use right away, but if you'd rather just see what public access will mean in practice, you can check out an app gallery at the second source link below.

O'Reilly Animals Enlists Technology Community to Help Save Endangered Species from Extinction

What do the Sumatran tiger, Philippine tarsier, and Galapagos land iguana have in common? They are all endangered or critically endangered species; they have all appeared on the covers of O?Reilly Media?s iconic software manuals; and they are all featured in the publisher?s new O?Reilly Animals campaign, which aims to mobilize the technology community to help save these species from extinction.

O?Reilly has been using old etchings of various animals as the covers for its programming books for decades and already includes some information on each species in the colophons of each book, but the new Animals campaign takes it further. The Web site presents detailed information on 10 of the animals (with more to come) as well as current technology projects that are aiding conservation efforts and a short list of opportunities where developers can volunteer their time and expertise.

This is the first time that the company has participated in a project of this scope, and it embodies founder Tim O?Reilly?s mantra of ?work on things that matter,? says creative director Edie Freedman, who designed the earliest ?animal books? and spearheaded the project. The campaign was first suggested by O?Reilly senior production manager Karen Montgomery, who currently designs the book covers and has been researching the animals for years. ?We do a lot of advocacy in the tech community for ideas we think are important but we?ve never done anything like this that is so specific and so targeted, but it just seems to make sense,? Freedman says.

After four months of work pulling the site together, O?Reilly Animals was announced and publicly launched July 16 at the OSCON open-source programming conference in Portland, Ore. The response was immediate. Freedman reports that developers flocked to the Animals display at the conference to ask how they could help their favorite cover models. ?The animals have done so much for the developers over the years. And they love the animals,? Freedman says. ?Quite a few of these programmers have backgrounds in biology and ecology academically, so they?re really interested in this stuff.?

In addition, Freedman was able to connect the community liaison for the open-source microcontroller project Arduino with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), which is looking to use Arduino electronics to build a new generation of remote-sensor cameras. A software company said they were willing to donate Web hosting to conservation organizations and a sensor manufacturer said they were interested in donating some of their hardware to other projects. They are also talking with the volunteering site Creative Cares, which matches designers and other skilled people with nonprofits in need.

?There are all kinds of ways to connect the dots,? Freedman says. ?If nothing else, we hope this will bring some awareness to the animals and some projects that are doing interesting things. Maybe people will donate money. I?d rather they donate their time and expertise.?

The O?Reilly Animals site currently showcases four technology projects that are aiding conservation efforts, including the Instant Wild app from the ZSL, which allows people around the world to identify the animals photographed by camera traps (?I?m hooked on it,? Freedman says), and an open-source GPS system to protect livestock from lions in Kenya. They?ll showcase other projects in the coming weeks and months. ?There?s a lot of interesting stuff out there. I think the more that we point to them and highlight them and follow them, and hopefully show some of the results that happen, that people will at least know about what?s going on. It?s harder when people feel something like this has no direct impact on them because it?s taking place halfway around the world and they don?t see it. We just like to do whatever we can to make it real.?

The site will also list other opportunities for developers to volunteer, although Freedman says these are harder to find. ?We?re not set up to seek out opportunities for developers, but we?re talking to conservation organizations about what they?re doing, and if we hear opportunities we?ll pass them along.?

The O?Reilly Animals project has a special resonance with Freedman, because some of the animals she used on the covers of the earliest programming books, such as the Javan tiger, have since been declared extinct. Many others aren?t doing well. ?Because we use old engravings from the last century or the century before, many of those animals are now either critically endangered or gone,? Freedman says. But she hopes the O?Reilly business and philosophy can help reverse some of that. ?The whole thing is just such a great expression of what we do. We convene people. We spark a connection and then the people carry it forward.?

Discover How To Have A Deeper, Richer Speaking ... - Wordy Writing

When we think of the great speaking voices, those that come to mind are the likes of Vin Diesel, Kathleen Turner, James Earl Jones, Cher, Sean Connery, Morgan Freeman, Demi Moore, Barry White, and John Rhys-Davies.

What distinguishes these particular voices from those of many other great actors, is that they captivate you because of the depth, the resonance, and the true beauty of their sound.

You possess a richer, warmer, deeper voice but are most likely unaware of how to find what I refer to as your ?real? voice. I am confident that your first thought at this point is that you are already speaking with your ?real? voice. No, you are presently speaking with your habitual voice. And, there can be an enormous difference between the two.

When I was in graduate school, studying music composition, my singing professor showed me where my ?real? voice was; and, from that day on, I consistently worked at using my lower, richer sound. To hear the difference between my ?real? voice and my habitual voice was like night and day. I thank God for that particular class, that particular professor, and that particular day because it changed the entire direction of my life.

1. In order to find your ?real? voice, you will need to learn to breathe with the support of your diaphragm because all of those with the great voices use their chest cavity as their primary sounding board. Most of the population, however, is not doing that. Lazy or shallow breathing, which is typical of 99% of the population, does not allow for the chest to be used as a resonator because the air is only filling the upper portion of the chest. In addition, this lazy or shallow breathing actually increases your stress and also raises the pitch of your speaking voice.

By breathing with the support of your diaphragm, you are then able to use your entire chest cavity to power or amplify your voice thereby reducing the wear and tear on your vocal folds (cords).

2. Once you have learned this basic principle of breathing with support, you then need to find your optimum pitch (pitch refers to the highness or lowness of sound; volume, on the other hand, refers to the loudness or softness of sound). You will know that you have ?hit the spot? if you feel vibrations in your chest when you are talking (not in your neck area ? every one vibrates there!).

While your optimum pitch is as individual to you as are your fingerprints, the beauty of being able speak within your optimum range is that your voice will take on a warmth, a depth and a resonance that was previously not there.

Imagine standing at the lectern or walking into a room and captivating the attention of the group just by the sound of your voice. Can it happen to you? Absolutely. You would be surprised at how many great voices are just waiting to be found.

Learn to breathe; find your optimum pitch; and, you may be the next James Earl Jones or Kathleen Turner!

Tullymurry Levi has bright chances in Keeper Tom Puppy Trophy - Div B at Coventry

It will be very difficult to stop Tullymurry Levi from bagging the first prize in the Keeper Tom Puppy Trophy - Div B, taking place at Coventry on Sunday, July 29th. Despite the fact that G. Oswald?s trainee is facing a strong opposition, one should not overlook the rhythm he is currently in.

The black dog is coming to this venue after doing plenty of good work at Sunderland. After striking a remarkable hat-trick, he lost his direction for a while, when ending up third in a 450 metres race at the start of this month.

He was badly crowded at the second bend and as a result, it was almost impossible for him to do anything special. An unlucky ride did not shake his confidence, as he demonstrated a fine performance on July 12th.

Despite getting crowded early on, the son of Royal Impact managed to lead at the second bend. He retained his advantage till the end, seizing the top rank by a couple of lengths.

After so many good acts, the juvenile is pumped up with confidence, and will be very hard to beat tonight. Among his rivals are: Woodys Alabama, Bursary Boy, Aghaburren Tom, Mademoiselle and Westmead Meteor.

The 485 metres open race carries a cash prize of ?200, which will go straight into pocket of the ultimate champion. The officials at Coventry are due to start the proceedings at 19:09 GMT.

Westmead Meteor, who will start the race from the first trap, does not have a good chance tonight. The black dog is in very poor form these days, and needs something extra special to unchain the shackles.

Mademoiselle will look to replicate what he did at Nottingham earlier this month. The brindle bitch will certainly be a dangerous player in today?s race.

Aghaburren Tom knows how to win an open race, but it is hard to trust him after a terrible defeat he suffered lately. Woodys Alabama is a powerful hound, but does not win consistently. On the other hand, Bursary Boy?s chances are slim.

It will be good to stick with Tullymurry Levi, who is in tremendous form these days. Woodys Alabama can make things a bit messy for him. Good luck to all the runners.

Fitness | Balancing A Busy Schedule And A Work Out Plan

Fitness experts (as what you will read more about fitness pump in this article) all agree that exercising is key to maintaining a healthy body and an active lifestyle. Even with your busy lifestyle, you should try to find time, or even make time, to exercise routinely. This article features many tips that can help you workout quickly and efficiently so you can spend the least amount of time yet get all the benefits of exercising.

In addition to following a heart-healthy diet, try regular aerobic exercise, the kind that makes your heart beat fast, because it is one of the best ways to lower cholesterol levels. Aerobic exercise, such as walking briskly, will also help you reduce fatigue, reduce weight, lower blood pressure and reduce stress levels.

If you find that your calves are tight when you wake up you should consider altering your sleeping method. Consider sleeping on your stomach with your feet hanging off of the bed. Gravity will slowly and gently stretch your calves throughout the night which should reduce any tightness you feel.

A great tip to help you get fit is to join an ultimate Frisbee league. Ultimate Frisbee is very similar to football except when you catch the Frisbee, everyone has to freeze. It can be a great way to get fit because of all the running and jumping you have to do.

Try doing dips that use double the energy to give your triceps a more effective workout during your routine. Start by doing your dips like you usually would, but with your elbows turned inward and keeping your body straightened. Then lean forward and force them outward to focus on your chest muscles.

Summer heat can really make it hard to get out and get the exercise that you want and need to get. Try to drink a low calorie slushie before or after your run. It will cool your body temperature down and give you a refreshing way to rehydrate after a long run.

Weight training is vital in a well-rounded fitness program. While not every program needs to concentrate on building muscle mass like a pro weightlifter, some attention to weight training is necessary for every fitness regimen. Weight training tones the muscles and makes them work efficiently. This has a positive impact on overall health and fitness at even the most modest levels of weight training.

In order to maximize your fitness potential, be sure to lightly exercise sore muscles the next day. This will allow blood to flow into the muscles at a much higher rate, therefor speeding up the healing process. Be sure to do more repetitions, but at a lighter weight or lighter strain.

Choose fitness activities you enjoy. There are enough activities to choose from that you are bound to find something you really enjoy and look forward to. If you don?t enjoy what you?re doing, you?re less likely to stick with it, so find something that you can see yourself doing regularly without resistance.

Diet greatly affects your body in the matter of fitness. A great way to eat healthy is to eat 4 to 8 ounces of meat every day. This will help you to grow muscle since meat is a good source of protein. Studies show that people who do this tend to be stronger as well.

Exercising increases the oxygen to the brain. Studies have proven that incorporating an exercise program to your daily routine will decrease the chance of getting dementia in up to 60% in older adults. Exercising releases proteins that strengthens the brain?s neurons and cells which is directly related to memory and learning.

When performing crunches, you should try and put your tongue on the roof of your mouth. A common problem people face when doing a lot of crunches is that their neck can get injured. Putting your tongue on the roof of your mouth can align your neck so that it won?t strain.

Fitness Pump

A great workout tip is to perform dips. Dips can work out both your triceps and your chest. To hit the triceps you should do dips with elbows in and your body straight. To hit the chest you should lean forward and flare your elbows out. You will feel a great Pump at the end.

Swing your arms while walking. You can burn up to 15 percent more calories while walking by simply pumping your arms as you walk. Bend your elbows 90 degrees and Pump you arms along with your stride, this automatically speeds up your pace and allows you to burn more calories.

There are many different types of classes available at most gyms these days and many of them can actually be very fun and entertaining. There is a whole line of Body Pump classes which try to integrate music and lights into the workout which causes the experience to be a much better one.

Increase the effectiveness of your walking workout. Bend your elbows at a 90 degree angle and Pump your arms with every step you take. This encourages you to walk faster, increases your heart rate, and can burn 15% more calories than if you keep your arms by your side. Try to walk for at least 30 minutes a day, and you will see the results in no time.

Do not think that you have to quickly Pump weights to impress others. This actually provides very little muscle building benefits, as the movement relies more on momentum than on actual strength. Instead, control the contraction of your muscle with a slow, steady movement; hold the position briefly; and then slowly release the muscle for a full repetition.

Exercise can really change your life for the better. Apply these easy tips to make your workout easy and fast, while achieving great results. Although you might not appreciate the importance of exercise in your daily routine, once you start, you won?t be able to go back. You feel younger, more energetic, and even in a better mood.

In Cyprus, a new generation inherits a conflict

PYLA, Cyprus (AP) ? Tell a Greek Cypriot that your next destination is the Turkish city of Istanbul, once the seat of empires, and there's a chance you will be gently chided. "You mean 'Constantinople,'" the conversation partner might say, referring to the former Byzantine capital, which fell to Ottoman armies in 1453.

This allegiance to the past is tinged with defiance, a stubborn refusal to call a place by the name chosen by the inhabitants of a hostile country. But it is more recent civil strife and war, nearly half a century ago, that infuse the psyche of Cyprus, a Mediterranean island favored by vacationers for its sun and beaches.??

In a strange twist, divided Cyprus has taken on a role meant to unify, this month assuming the rotating presidency of the European Union, a six-month stint that gives it a self-promotional platform even as it scrambles for a multi-billion dollar bailout to support its troubled banks. In another quirk of split-screen Cyprus, it is seeking money from oil-rich Russia, an increasingly important friend, in addition to the EU, as it tries to avoid the austerity measures that would likely come with any European aid.

At the heart of these dueling directions lies the "Cyprus problem," as it is blandly known.

Talk of a peace settlement between the island's majority Greek Cypriot community and Turkish Cypriots that would end decades of political uncertainty is giving way to a sense that the problem is, unofficially, the default solution.

"People are simply not interested in any form of power-sharing," said Yiannis Papadakis, a social anthropologist at the University of Cyprus. "There is a strong denial of this reality."

Papadakis said the problem is so consuming that it has sapped will on both sides to debate migration, the environment, women's rights and other important social issues. He questioned whether they can compromise and trust each other if they ever reach a political settlement.

Cyprus, which joined the EU in 2004, split into an internationally recognized, Greek-speaking south and a Turkish-speaking north after a 1974 invasion by Turkey, a reaction to a coup attempt by supporters of union with Greece. Travel restrictions between the two sides have relaxed, but negotiations on security and territory foundered. Only Turkey, whose EU candidacy has stalled partly because of the impasse, recognizes the government in the north.

The result is an island that is not quite a nation, with an identity that is the sum of its shards. When George Andreou became the first Cypriot to climb Mount Everest and held up his nation's flag at the summit in May, it was a reminder of division as well as a symbol of unity.

The flag, designed by a Turkish Cypriot and adopted in 1960 after independence from British rule, shows a map of the whole island and two olive branches, a symbol of peace between communities. But Turkish Cypriots use a flag that is a variation of the star and crescent emblem of Turkey, their patron.

In his rucksack, Andreou, 39, also carried the old flag of his hometown Famagusta, which he and his ethnic Greek family fled ahead of Turkish forces, less than one year after he was born. The climber has never returned to his house in Famagusta, where Turkish Cypriots now live, because he thinks it would help to legitimize Turkish forces based in the northern part of the island.

"It is like I never lived my childhood or I refused to remember," Andreou wrote in an email. "I know from my parents that they had been very difficult years since we left everything behind, hoping we would go back soon. It never happened. Instead, we lived in houses without doors and windows, in tents, in the fields, anywhere just to stay safe and away from war."

Days after Andreou, a banker, returned from the Himalayas, his wife gave birth to their first child, who may grow up to discover the same sour politics. The same goes for the 3-year-old daughter of Ahmet Sozen, a Turkish Cypriot research director at Cyprus 2015, a group that seeks to promote joint understanding.

Sozen said the uncertainty goes back to the 1950s, when his father, now 80 years old, was a police officer in a British administration fighting a Greek Cypriot guerrilla group that sought union with Greece.

While today's stalemate is violence-free, Sozen maintains the ethnic Greek-Turkish divide has a corrosive impact on Cypriot psychology.

"I don't want my little daughter to go through the same thing in her life," said Sozen, who was inspired to become a professor of politics in order to help find a solution, even though his self-described "life mission" sometimes exhausts and frustrates him. Polls by his group indicate that Turkish Cypriots, who have leaned toward living apart because of fears of being dominated, and Greek Cypriots, who have tended to prefer a one-state island dominated by their majority, are moving further from the compromise of a power-sharing federation.

Greek Cypriots fear encroachment from Turkey, a rising power that objects to Greek Cypriot plans for off-shore oil and gas exploration. They highlight past suffering, but gloss over the question of 1960s attacks on Turkish Cypriots. Turkish Cypriots resent the Greek Cypriot rejection of unification in a 2004 referendum.

"As more time passes, it's not good for the result, meaning that people are not moving toward the solution spirit. On the contrary," said Sozen, noting that the problem is exacerbated by a gap between Cypriots and their leaders. "People are alienated in the sense that the common people are shut away from the official process. The general public is not really informed by what is happening."

In February, Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu said negotiations with the Greek Cypriot leader left "a zucchini taste in the mouth," a Turkish way of saying they have grown bland.

His Greek Cypriot counterpart, President Demetris Christofias said in May that talking to Eroglu was like trying to knock down a wall by throwing eggs at it.

Induction cooktop More Details about Induction cooktop here.

Induction Cooktop has become an integral part of many home kitchens. It has already gained popularity among the chefs of large restaurants and hotels. It is now the turn of the housewives to realize the benefits and going for induction cook tops in a large way. Induction cooking has considerably shortened the time it takes to cook. Imagine after a hard day at the work place, you return home and are required to cook for the family. Induction cook tops will do the job in a jiffy.

Besides being incredibly fast, there are other attributes which endears it to both chefs and housewives alike. This includes more heat, accurate temperature control, and also energy savings. This is one of the biggest advantages of induction cooking. Induction cooking heats the actual vessel and there is no heat lost due to convection and radiation. It is also very safe since there is no open flame of gas which can cause fire. Induction cooktop is a common feature in Aircrafts and Spacecrafts because of its safety features. The safety features also makes induction cooktop an ideal feature in households which have children. One of the best features is that the cooktop remains cool even though the contents in the vessel may be boiling hot.

Since the cooktop remains cool, there is no risk of the spills getting charred and the cooktop getting stained. Just wipe off the surface and the induction cooktop become sparkling clean and just like new. Another feature with the induction cooking is that the kitchen remains much cooler since there is no open flame which will heat the surroundings in the kitchen. The kitchen becomes much cooler for cooking.

The conversion from gas cooktop and electricity to induction cooking is not so forthcoming. One of the hindrances in the widespread popularity of induction cooking is the peculiarity of the induction cooking itself. Induction cooking is effected by the electromagnetic induction which heats up the vessel. However the vessel should be ferromagnetic like cast iron or copper in which the electromagnetism can be induced. Another major handicap is that the vessel must have a flat bottom so that it remains in contact with the cooktop. Pots and curved pans cannot be used with induction cook tops. However new and better cooktop are entering the market which has a curved base so that pots and curved pans can also be used for cooking.

At least three banks seen central to Libor rigging

REUTERS - New details from court documents and sources close to the Libor scandal investigation suggest that groups of traders working at three major European banks were heavily involved in rigging global benchmark interest rates.

Some of those traders, including one who used to work at Barclays Plc in New York, still have senior positions on Wall Street trading desks.

Until now, most of the attention has involved traders at Barclays, which last month reached a $453 million settlement with U.S. and UK authorities for its role in the manipulation of rates. Now, it is becoming clear that traders from at least two other banks - UK-based Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc and Switzerland's UBS AG - played a central role.

Between them, the three banks employed more than a dozen traders who sought to influence rates in either dollar, euro or yen rates. Some of the traders who are being probed have worked for several banks under scrutiny, raising the possibility that the rate fixing became more ingrained as traders changed jobs.

The documents reviewed by Reuters in analyzing the traders' involvement included court filings by Canadian regulators who have been investigating potential antitrust issues; settlement documents with Barclays filed by the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission in Washington and by the Financial Services Authority in the U.K.; and a private employment lawsuit filed by a former RBS trader in Singapore's High Court.

The scandal, which began to come to light in 2008, has become a time bomb for regulators and a big focus for politicians on both sides of the Atlantic. At issue is the manipulation between at least 2005 and 2009 of rates that are used to determine the cost of trillions of dollars of borrowings, including everything from home loans to credit card rates.

One former Barclays employee under scrutiny, Reuters has learned, is Jay V. Merchant, according to people familiar with the situation. Merchant, who oversaw the U.S. dollar swaps trading desk at Barclays in New York, worked for the bank from March 2006 to October 2009, according to employment records maintained by the U.S. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).

Merchant currently holds a similar position at UBS, where he works out of the Swiss bank's offices in Stamford, Connecticut, according to FINRA. He did not return requests for comment.

People familiar with the investigation said authorities are looking at whether some individuals on Merchant's trading desk tried to influence the rate on Libor by communicating with other traders in London to get a higher return on certain swaps the desk was trading. His specific role is unclear.

The Department of Justice declined to comment.

Merchant's attorney, John Kenney of Hoguet Newman Regal & Kenney, did not respond to requests seeking comment.

A UBS spokeswoman said that the bank has "no reason to believe Mr. Merchant has engaged in any improper conduct at UBS." The spokeswoman, who noted that Merchant is on a two-week vacation, declined to comment on the broader investigation.

Barclays declined to comment. In a statement, an RBS spokeswoman said the bank is cooperating with the investigation.

SPREAD FROM BARCLAYS

Earlier this week, Reuters reported that federal prosecutors in Washington have begun reaching out to lawyers for some of the individuals under scrutiny as they get closer to bringing possible criminal charges.

The dollar and euro rate-rigging appears to have begun in earnest in early 2005 in the dollar market, according to the documents reviewed by Reuters. By August of that year, Barclays traders were reaching out to traders at other big global banks to manipulate their rates to make them favorable to Barclays' trading positions.

Soon, the trading had crossed to the euro rate markets, according to the settlement documents filed in the Barclays investigation. And by 2007, traders at RBS and UBS were seeking to influence the yen rate market, according to documents filed in 2011 in Singapore's High Court and in Canada's Ontario Superior Court.

Traders at Barclays are believed to have participated in manipulating the rate for the dollar and the rate for the euro known as Euribor, according to documents filed in the Barclays settlement last month.

RBS and UBS traders are a focus of the global investigation because of their alleged involvement in seeking to influence yen-denominated rates.

Two RBS traders in London, Brent Davies and Will Hall, are alleged to have agreed to help a trader at UBS, Thomas Hayes, to manipulate yen Libor, according to court documents filed by the Canadian Competition Bureau.

UBS is cooperating with Canadian and U.S. authorities, according to people familiar with the situation.

Hayes worked at UBS from 2006 to 2009. He later moved to Citigroup where he remained until 2010, after which he left the bank. Hayes, Davies and Hall could not be reached for comment.

The documents reveal that Hayes also contacted traders at other banks in London to get them to manipulate yen rates. They include Peter O'Leary at HSBC Holdings Plc, Guillaume Adolph at Deutsche, and Paul Glands at JPMorgan. A second UBS employee sought to get a Citigroup trader, who formerly had worked at UBS, to influence rates.

None of these traders could be reached for comment.

CONDONED

In addition, a former trader at RBS, Tan Chi Min, said in a wrongful termination lawsuit filed in the Singapore High Court in 2011 that he was forced out for "improperly seeking to influence" the setting of Libor. Tan, who ran a trading desk at RBS, said in the suit that improper rate-rigging was known by some at the bank and condoned.

Tan denied trying to manipulate Libor, and alleged in the 2011 court filing, and one in March this year, that about a half dozen other RBS traders openly tried to request specific rates.

Tan's attorney, N. Sreenivasan, declined to comment because the court case is ongoing.

Beyond traders at the three European banks, authorities are still probing the role of others.

For example, traders at JPMorgan Chase & Co also interacted with some of the traders under scrutiny who worked for Barclays and RBS, according to a person familiar with the situation and court documents filed in Singapore.

Similarly, Deutsche Bank AG also had several employees whose trading is under scrutiny by authorities, according to people familiar with the situation and court documents filed in Canada.

JPMorgan and Deutsche Bank declined to comment.

(AP) ? Katherine Jackson's attorney said late Thursday that he had met with his client face-to-face for the first time in several days and that she was doing fine despite familial squabbling that forced a judge to temporarily suspend her as guardian of her son Michael's three children.

"I had a long and productive meeting today with Mrs. Jackson," Perry Sanders Jr. wrote in a statement. "I am pleased to report that she is fine and she laughed at the widely publicized report that she had suffered a stroke."

The description of Jackson suffering a stroke was included in a letter signed by five of her children calling on executors of Michael Jackson's estate to step down. The letter was leaked last week and was an early sign of turmoil that was to come for the Jackson clan. Since late Saturday when a relative reported Katherine Jackson missing, speculation has swirled about her whereabouts, her health and why she hadn't called her grandchildren for nearly 10 days. Rival factions in the family released dueling statements on Twitter and family members tussled in the driveway of her home in an incident that remains under investigation.

Sanders said he would be releasing a formal statement Friday morning about his discussions with Katherine Jackson. He has previously said he will move to re-instate her as guardian over Jackson's children, Prince, Paris, and Blanket.

Although Thursday was a mostly quiet day in the ongoing Jackson family turmoil, it was not without drama.

"Although I am happy my grandma was returned, after speaking with her I realized how misguided and how badly she was lied to," Prince Jackson wrote in a posting on his Twitter account. "I'm really angry and hurt."

Hours later the post was deleted, but re-emerged by late afternoon, with the eldest son of Michael Jackson wondering if his account had been hacked. The post was the first time Prince Jackson, 15, had publicly commented on his grandmother's absence.

A judge on Wednesday granted Tito Jackson's son TJ temporary guardianship over the children, citing concerns that Katherine Jackson was being prevented from fulfilling her role as guardian. Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff said there were no indications the 82-year-old had done anything wrong, and he would likely re-instate her upon her return.

Katherine Jackson had been at a Tucson, Ariz. spa since July 15 with her daughter Rebbie and other relatives and had not spoken to her grandchildren during that time. TJ Jackson and numerous others said that was unusual and when she did call, he said she sounded "strange."

"I've never heard my grandmother talk like that," he said reluctantly. "In every way. The sound in her voice. The pauses."

Sanders, who had flown to Arizona to try to meet with his client on Tuesday, was not allowed to see her at the resort.

He said some of her speech sounded slurred and she used words that made him wonder if she was speaking in code.

Before leaving Arizona to return to her hilltop home in suburban Calabasas, Katherine Jackson told ABC News that the court ruling was "based on a bunch of lies."

If Katherine Jackson does not move for an emergency hearing to reinstate her guardianship position, another hearing in the case will be convened Aug. 22.

German sought in fraud scheme arrested in Vegas

Steve Marcus / Reuters

A police car blocks the road Friday as federal and local law enforcement officials take artwork from a storage building in Boulder City, Nevada, in a seizure related to the arrest of German fugitive Ulrich Felix Anton Engler.

By NBC News and wire services

A German fugitive sought for five years in a Florida-based fraud scheme that netted more than $100 million has been arrested in Las Vegas, authorities said Friday.

Ulrich Felix Anton Engler, 51, was arrested for being in violation of U.S. immigration law, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said.

He is wanted on criminal charges filed in Mannheim and Hamburg, Germany, courts where he is accused of committing fraud on a repetitive and gainful basis, officials?said in a prepared statement.?If convicted, Engler?faces up to 20 years in prison.

A fingerprint match from a Feb. 11, 2011, drunken driving case in which a Nevada Highway Patrol officer cited Engler, who may have used a different name at the time, helped U.S. Marshals track him down, The Associated Press reported.

?I hope Mr. Engler's victims in this case feel a measure of relief that Mr. Engler's fraud and long run are over and that he will soon face justice in Germany for his alleged crimes," said?ICE Director John Morton.

The FBI and local police on Friday seized more than 1,000 pieces of artwork from a storage facility that Engler?allegedly rented in Boulder City, about 25 miles east of Las Vegas.

FBI Agent Patrick Turner in Las Vegas called the action?an effort to recover proceeds on behalf of Engler's alleged victims.

Engler is accused of using a marketing company in Cape Coral, Fla., to build an Internet pyramid scheme. From June 2003 to December 2004, it collected almost $101 million from more than 3,500 investors in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, authorities said. Once the money reached the United States, investors lost access to it, they said.

When the arrest warrant was issued in Germany, Engler was believed to have been living in Florida.

Last year,?U.S. marshals and INTERPOL officials in Washington determined Engler was living in Nevada, where he was perpetuating his fraud schemes under a new identity, Joseph Miller, officials said.

He will be turned over to law enforcement officials in Germany, they said.

Now anyone can create an iTunes U course to be viewed on student iPads

Now anyone can create an iTunes U course to be viewed on student iPads

Alongside the release of OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, Apple also updated iTunes U to allow teachers (and virtually anyone) to create courses for the iPad. More specifically, the courses that are created can be shared and viewed in the iTunes U iPad app.

Now it?s easier than ever to unleash the full potential of iPad in your classroom by creating your own courses for iPad. You get to share your ideas in a powerful new way, and your students get a rich, immersive learning experience using the iTunes U app for iPad. iTunes U is available no matter where you teach ? at any college, university, or K-12 school.

It turns out that you actually don't have to be a teacher at all to create an iTunes U course. All you have to do is visit the iTunes U Course Manager page and create an account. However, the catch is that if your Apple ID is not associated with an educational institution, you cannot publish your course to iTunes U, but are given a link that you can share with whoever you want. When someone clicks on the link with their iPad, they will be taken to the iTunes U app and be granted access to your course. Apple ID's that are not associated with an educational institution are limited to creating no more than 12 courses and enrolling no more than 50 students per course.

This lower level of entry is awesome for teachers at schools that do not have an iTunes U account. For example, since the community college I teach at does not have an iTunes U account, I have never been able to create an iTunes U course to use alongside my courses. Now I can! Smaller K-12 schools may also not be interested in the hassle of creating an iTunes U account for their institution, but individual teachers can choose to use it anyway. This really was a smart move by Apple. Especially with the iPad mini's imminent release.

However, the biggest thing that iTunes U currently has going for it is its availability on the iPhone and iPad and the ability for anyone to be a "teacher". Personally, I will continue to use my own personal website to make content available to my students because of the restriction that my iTunes U courses must be viewed on an iPad. Availability on the iPad is awesome -- restricting to only the iPad? Not so much. (This is only the case for teachers who are not associated with an educational institution's iTunes U account). Now, my feelings may change if a large percentage of my students have iPads once the iPad mini is released, but with only 1 or 2 of my students owning iPads, iTunes U just isn't a practical choice for me.

From a student's perspective, if you're looking for a free online course that is not associated with an actual course you're enrolled in, there are similar services, like Udacity, that are much more robust and provide a better learning experience. I hope Apple is taking notes, because I'd love to see iTunes U reach a similar level.

In addition to the changes for teachers in iTunes U, the iTunes U iPhone and iPad app has also been updated for students.

iTunes U 1.2 now makes it easy to take notes while watching or listening to a lecture. This update also adds the ability to search within posts, assignments, notes, and materials ? from any of your subscribed courses ? using the improved Search feature in iTunes U. It is also now simple to share your favorite courses with friends using Twitter, Mail, and Messages.

So what do you think about these changes to iTunes U? Are you a teacher and planning to use iTunes U to supplement your class? I'd love to hear from students as well -- do you want your teachers to start using iTunes U? Have you ever taken an iTunes U course? What was it a good experience? Let us know!

Have broadband internet. Need phone service immediately.? - Your ...

Question by Tony: Have broadband internet. Need phone service immediately.?
Hi. I?m new to VOIP technology. I have internet 7mbps with Charter (cable). I?m paying $ 100/month for internet, phone (that I barely use) and basic satellite tv which I don?t even use as I don?t have a dish or watch tv. So now I?m thinking to cancel everything but internet and use some type of VOIP phone service but I need something right now, in the next 20 minutes that doesn?t require hardware. Some software I can download, pay if I have to and start making calls in the US. I don?t need all the bells and whistles. I make the most 20 calls in the US/month.

So basically what I need is the following, if available:

- Phone available as soon as I sign up or install some communication software
- Service doesn?t require microphone or any other hardware other than regular home phone
- A phone number. Don?t care whether is local or not.
- 911 calls, not a must but nice.

I know about skype, netcall, Magic Jack and others but they either take a while to receive the hardware and I don?t have a microphone. I need to be able to use my regular landline phone. I need to be able to call and receive calls ASAP.

Is there anything like that available out there?

Best answer:

Answer by drock912001
No there isn?t,a traditional land line would be your best bet. They usually take a few hours to activate. All the other 1?s require some type of hardware, even google talk requires a microphone but is solely dependent on your computer.

ND in the Olympics: An Interview with Gerek | Her Loyal Sons

We were lucky enough to recently catch up with Gerek Meinhardt of Olympic fencing fame, to discuss his history with fencing and his time at Notre Dame. Gerek was kind enough to answer some questions all the way from his apartment in Olympic Village. Check out Gerek on Twitter @GerekMeinhardt!

How did you get started in Fencing? The story of how I got into fencing actually isn't as exciting as one would hope! My lifelong fencing coach was actually a family friend before I started training with him; my parents signed me up for a new club he was opening up, The Massialas Foundation, when I was nine years old. I instantly fell in love with the sport and kept it up ever since.

What's the biggest misconception about Fencing? One of the biggest misconceptions about fencing is that it's what you see in the classic movies. Of course, there are movie and fencing history fanatics that do take up the sport for recreation and enjoyment of "sword-fighting" and "dueling", but at the elite level, fencing is very much an aggressive, intense, and extremely athletic sport. Just look up some of the World Championship and Olympic footage on Youtube!

What's the secret to being great at fencing? I fence foil, which is one of the three weapons (foil, epee, saber). They have different rules and different target areas, and because of how different they are, rarely do any fencers compete in more than one weapon (successfully) at the elite level. One of the secrets to being a good fencer in general is really similar to any sport - a passion and commitment to your sport and your goals within the sport. For me, going in to train is something I enjoy, and I have fun every time I am at practice, no matter how tired I am. This allows me the ability to improve, because it isn't a task or chore to me. Being dedicated to your sport makes you want to learn from every match, no matter who you're facing, and I think that applies to every sport. Fencing is a great sport because there are always things to work on, even if you're the Olympic champion. Competitors are always adapting to how you fence and specific tendencies that you have by watching video on you, so you have to be aware of this and put just as much work in to keep everyone targeting you at bay.

What led to your choosing Notre Dame? Aside from the endless list of benefits that we all know Notre Dame to have (beautiful campus, incredibly strong academics, great support system), Notre Dame also has one of the best fencing programs in the country. I wanted to attend a university that had a strong academic program, since I do not plan on making a professional career out of fencing, but I also wanted to be at a school that would allow for me to continue improving over the course of my college career. Notre Dame, with its great coaching staff, facilities, and all around commitment to its athletes, was an obvious choice for me. I have loved my time at Notre Dame, the lifelong friends I've made, and the whole atmosphere and environment that has become a part of me throughout my college experience thus far at Notre Dame.

f
Gerek and Fellow ND Olympians on the Field at Half Time

What's been your biggest success at ND? I would have to say that my biggest success at Notre Dame has been recovering from a string of three knee surgeries since I enrolled back in 2008. I am so thankful for the training staff at Notre Dame for helping me in my recovery and physical training, my coaches for being patient and ever-supportive of me, and of course my friends, family, and teammates (who I can consider as both friends and family) who were with me every step of the way. Without their support, I would not have been able to achieve my greatest result to date, which was winning the bronze medal at the Senior World Championships in the Fall of my 2010 school-year at Notre Dame. It is the only medal in Team USA's history won in my event at the Senior World Championships.

We hear a lot about the challenges of being a student-athlete at ND, and how hard it is to balance things. Being a student-athlete at ND, AND an Olympian must be insanely tough. How do you manage it? My ability to juggle academics with my vigorous national, international, and NCAA competitions would probably be a close second in the "my biggest success at Notre Dame" category. Throughout the season, there are four national competitions and around ten international competitions, most of which are in Europe or Asia. Two of these, the Pan American Championships and World Championships typically span a week-and-a-half. Of course, I am not able to attend every tournament given conflicts between inflexible exam schedules and NCAA events, but I do have to attend the greater majority of them to maintain my ranking in the United States and the World. I can honestly say that without my parents' constant lessons in self-discipline and time management growing up, I would have crumbled under the pressure and work load. By being organized and meticulously planning out my schedule, I am usually able to complete my schoolwork and submit it to Professor's before I leave for trips. While on the trips, there is of course work that I have to do at the hotel when I am not competing, to keep on track with the lessons that are being taught while I'm thousands of miles away, and to study for exams that I'll have to take as soon as I get back. Thankfully most of my Professors are willing to work with me and understand that I am still committed to the course, although often traveling.

USC is ND's rival in Football. Michigan is the Enemy. Who is ND's rival in Fencing? Who is the Enemy? In recent NCAA fencing history, the powerhouses have been "the" Ohio State, Notre Dame (GO IRISH), and Penn State. The past few years, St. Johns and Princeton have also been successful at NCAA Championships. Ohio State is probably the historic rival given that they are in the same Midwest Conference as us and we compete against them several times throughout the year. However, in my term at Notre Dame, I would say that Penn State is our biggest "enemy" given that they won NCAA's both my freshman and sophomore years. We took the Championship my Junior year though, and I plan on being a part of another NCAA Championship team this coming year! Go Irish. Beat Nittany Lions! And Ohio State, Princeton, St. John's, and every other team.

What do Olympians from other countries know about/think about Notre Dame? Is the school on the radar in the International Olympians world? Or is it only all about the Country? This Olympics alone, the US Fencing team has two former and three current/incoming Notre Dame students. One of the graduates is the reigning two-time Olympic Gold medalist, Mariel Zagunis. Because of the strong presence of Notre Dame athletes on the National team, in addition to several great international fencers that Notre Dame has as well, Notre Dame is definitely on the radar of the International fencing scene.

Gerek Shows off his Sweet USA Mask
How have ND fans been in supporting your quest for an Olympic medal? What can fans do to show their support? ND fans have been amazing as I've trained and prepared for this Olympics. There's nothing better than being at a World Cup in a random European country when a Notre Dame fan comes up to me and wish me good luck. The Notre Dame family is huge, and I am fortunate to be a part of such a large, supportive community. I enjoy every tweet from ND fans showing their support, and each one means a lot to me as I prepare for my event in the coming weeks.

Thanks Gerek! Best of luck, Gerek! Let's get that Gold!
