Space X's Dragon launch... is go! (Update)

Image

We're crossing our fingers and toes so hard we can barely type and walk, since it looks like the oft-delayed Dragon launch will take place tomorrow. SpaceX founder Elon Musk confirmed that the company had passed final launch review with NASA and that everything was set for the Falcon 9 to lift off at 4:15AM ET on May 19th. The lift-off will be broadcast live from the official website and is on course to be the first private spaceflight to dock and deliver essential supplies to the International Space Station. For our part? We wish the craft (and the ground crew) all the best and hope it's a perfect flight -- we wanna stay in a space hotel sooner rather than later.

Update: At around 5:06AM ET, Elon Musk tweeted that the launch had been aborted due to high combustion chamber pressure around Engine 5. It won't be leaving for another couple of days.

Advanced Prostate Cancer Drug May Help at Earlier Stage

WEDNESDAY, May 16 (HealthDay News) -- A drug approved to treat advanced prostate cancer appears to help men who have localized high-risk prostate cancer if given before surgery.

Adding Zytiga (abiraterone) to conventional hormonal treatments eliminated or nearly eliminated the prostate cancer in one-third of men with this often-lethal form, according to new research to be presented at next month's annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago.

"This is one of the first -- if not the first -- study to show that you can make prostate cancer in the prostate gland itself disappear in a reproducible number of patients," ASCO official Dr. Nicholas Vogelzang said at a Wednesday press conference.

Commenting on the findings, Dr. Jay Brooks, chairman of hematology/oncology at Ochsner Health System in Baton Rouge, said, "This is exciting. It's a novel way to eliminate cancer before surgery."

However, Brooks, who was not involved in the study, cautioned that the findings were still preliminary and need further investigation.

Trying to shrink a tumor with chemotherapy and/or radiation before surgery is standard for other types of cancer, such as breast or colon, but hasn't to date shown a benefit in prostate cancer, study author Dr. Mary-Ellen Taplin, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, explained at the news conference.

Localized high-risk prostate cancer, which is defined as prostate cancer in men with a prostate-specific antigen level above 20, high-grade disease (a Gleason score of 8 or more), and stage T3 disease (indicating the tumor has spread through the prostate), carries with it a poor prognosis.

Standard hormonal therapy, which stops the production of male hormones (androgens), has not been shown to be effective in this type of cancer when given before surgery. Nor has the surgery, which removes the entire prostate.

Zytiga blocks production of testosterone, which can promote the growth of prostate cancer cells, but in a different way than established hormonal treatments.

This small, phase 2 trial involved 56 men with an average age of 58, all of whom had had at least three positive biopsies for prostate cancer.

For the first three months, 27 men received the standard hormonal therapy leuprolide alone, followed by leuprolide plus Zytiga for another three months.

The remaining 29 men received the two-drug combination for the whole six months, after which all men in both groups underwent prostate surgery.

One-third of the men who had received leuprolide plus Zytiga for the entire six months saw complete or nearly complete elimination of their cancer.

By comparison, only 15 percent of men in the other group experienced these results, the investigators found.

Those who received the combination for only 12 weeks had much lower response rates.

The participants also received low doses of the steroid prednisone to prevent side effects from Zytiga, although side effects overall were minimal, said Taplin.

It's not clear at this point why some men responded to the combination therapy while others did not, and that is an area that needs to be studied, the researchers said.

"In highly select people who have this aggressive type of prostate cancer, I think this is an important area to investigate," Brooks noted. "We need to figure out which patients would potentially benefit."

According to study author Taplin, the research received some funding from Johnson & Johnson, the maker of Zytiga. She said the drug is currently U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved for patients with advanced prostate cancer that does not respond to hormone therapy, and costs about $5,000 per month.

The data and conclusions of research presented at medical meetings should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

The litany of exciting Maker Faire products continues with MaKey MaKey, a device that turns anything capable of conducting electricity into a controller. Developed by MIT Media Lab students Jay Silver and Eric Rosenbaum, you simply run a bulldog clip from the board to an object and hold a connecting wire in your hand. Connecting over USB, it's entirely programming-free, but if you find your interest piqued, you can flip the board over to use the Arduino module baked into the hardware. It's already surpassed its original $25,000 Kickstarter goal and when the run begins, you'll be able to pick up everything you need for just $35 -- but if you can't wait that long, head on down to the Bay Area this weekend.

As Facebook grows, millions say, 'no, thanks'

NEW YORK (AP) ? Don't try to friend MaLi Arwood on Facebook. You won't find her there.

You won't find Thomas Chin, either. Or Kariann Goldschmitt. Or Jake Edelstein.

More than 900 million people worldwide check their Facebook accounts at least once a month, but millions more are Facebook holdouts.

They say they don't want Facebook. They insist they don't need Facebook. They say they're living life just fine without the long-forgotten acquaintances that the world's largest social network sometimes resurrects.

    They are the resisters.

"I'm absolutely in touch with everyone in my life that I want to be in touch with," Arwood says. "I don't need to share triviality with someone that I might have known for six months 12 years ago."

Even without people like Arwood, Facebook is one of the biggest business success stories in history. The site had 1 million users by the end of 2004, the year Mark Zuckerberg started it in his Harvard dorm room. Two years later, it had 12 million. Facebook had 500 million by summer 2010 and 901 million as of March 31, according to the company.

That staggering rise in popularity is one reason why Facebook Inc.'s initial public offering is one of the most hotly anticipated in years. The company's shares are expected to begin trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market on Friday under the ticker symbol "FB". Facebook is likely to have an estimated market valuation of some $100 billion, making it worth more than Kraft Foods, Ford or Disney.

Facebook still has plenty of room to grow, particularly in developing countries where people are only starting to get Internet access. As it is, about 80 percent of its users are outside U.S. and Canada.

But if Facebook is to live up to its pre-IPO hype and reward the investors who are clamoring for its stock this week, it needs to convince some of the resisters to join. Two out of every five American adults have not joined Facebook, according to a recent Associated Press-CNBC poll. Among those who are not on Facebook, a third cited a lack of interest or need.

If all those people continue to shun Facebook, the social network could become akin to a postal system that only delivers mail to houses on one side of the street. The system isn't as useful, and people aren't apt to spend as much time with it. That means fewer opportunities for Facebook to sell ads.

Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet & American Life Project, says that new communications channels ? from the telephone to radio, TV and personal computers ? often breed a cadre of holdouts in their early days.

"It's disorienting because people have different relationships with others depending on the media they use," Rainie says. "But we've been through this before. As each new communications media comes to prominence, there is a period of adoption."

Len Kleinrock, 77, says Facebook is fine for his grandchildren, but it's not for him.

"I do not want more distractions," he says. "As it is, I am deluged with email. My friends and colleagues have ready access to me and I don't really want another service that I would feel obliged to check into on a frequent basis."

Kleinrock says his resistance is generational, but discomfort with technology isn't a factor.

After all, Kleinrock is arguably the world's first Internet user. The University of California, Los Angeles professor was part of the team that invented the Internet. His lab was where researchers gathered in 1969 to send test data between two bulky computers ?the beginnings of the Arpanet network, which morphed into the Internet we know today.

"I'm having a 'been-there, done-that' feeling," Kleinrock says. "There's not a need on my part for reaching out and finding new social groups to interact with. I have trouble keeping up with those I'm involved with now."

Thomas Chin, 35, who works at an advertising and media planning company in New York, says he may be missing out on what friends-of-friends-of-friends are doing, but he doesn't need Facebook to connect with family and closer acquaintances.

"If we're going to go out to do stuff, we organize it (outside) of Facebook," he says.

Some people don't join the social network because they don't have a computer or Internet access, are concerned about privacy, or generally dislike Facebook. Those without a college education are less likely to be on Facebook, as are those with lower incomes. Women who choose to skip Facebook are more likely than men to cite privacy issues, while seniors are more likely than those 50-64 years old to cite computer issues, according the AP-CNBC poll.

About three-quarters of seniors are not on Facebook. By contrast, more than half of those under 35 use it every day.

The poll of 1,004 adults nationwide was conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications May 3-7 and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.

Steve Jones, a professor who studies online culture and communications at the University of Illinois at Chicago, says many resisters consider Facebook to be too much of a chore.

"We've added social networking to our lives. We haven't added any hours to our days," Jones says. "The decision to be online on Facebook is simultaneously a decision not to be doing something else."

Jones says many people on Facebook try to overcome that by multitasking, but they end up splitting their attention and engaging with others online only superficially.

Arwood, 47, a restaurant manager in Chicago, says she was surprised when colleagues on an English-teaching program in rural Spain in 2010 opted to spend their breaks checking Facebook.

"I spent my time on break trying to learn more about the Spanish culture, really taking advantage of it," she says. "I went on walks with some of the students and asked them questions."

Kariann Goldschmitt, 32, a music professor at New College of Florida in Sarasota, Fla., was on Facebook not long after its founding in 2004, but she quit in 2010. In part, it was because of growing concerns about her privacy and Facebook's ongoing encouragement of people to share more about themselves with the company, with marketers and with the world.

She says she's been much more productive since leaving.

"I was a typical user, on it once or twice a day," she says. "After a certain point, I sort of resented how it felt like an obligation rather than fun."

Besides Facebook resisters and quitters, there are those who take a break. In some cases, people quit temporarily as they apply for new jobs, so that potential employers won't stumble on photos of their wild nights out drinking. Although Facebook doesn't make it easy to find, it offers options for both deleting and suspending accounts.

Goldschmitt says it takes effort to stay in touch with friends and relatives without Facebook. For instance, she has to make mental notes of when her friends are expecting babies, knowing that they have become so used to Facebook "that they don't engage with us anymore."

"I'm like, 'Hmmm, when is nine months?' I have to remember to contact them since they won't remember to tell me when the baby's born."

Neil Robinson, 54, a government lawyer in Washington, says that when his nephew's son was born, pictures went up on Facebook almost immediately. As a Facebook holdout, he had to wait for someone to email photos.

After years of resisting, Robinson plans to join next month, mostly because he doesn't want to lose touch with younger relatives who choose Facebook as their primary means of communication.

But for every Robinson, there is an Edelstein, who has no desire for Facebook and prefers email and postcards.

"I prefer to keep my communications personal and targeted," says Jake Edelstein, 41, a pharmaceutical consultant in New York. "You're getting a message that's written for you. Clearly someone took the time to sit down to do it."

Floored!, the official blog of the National Restaurant Association ...

Kruse cited examples of new items in three categories that she predicted will continue to grow, including comfort foods, food trucks, and authenticity.

In the comfort category, she said, new bread products are evolving, particularly waffles and pretzels. New versions of chicken and waffles, waffle sandwiches, upgraded Belgian waffles and savory waffles are appearing in everything from quickservice chains to fine dining restaurants, she said.

In addition, a hot-dog resurgence is catching the tailwind of the better burger revival, Kruse said. Regional hot-dog preferences have held back the trend, but some chains recently have added some of the regional flavors to their menus.

Food trucks also are succeeding because of their personalized, made-to-order service style, she said. About 30 large chains have introduced food trucks and use them for catering and bringing their products to local events.?

Kruse said "menu innovation" is making inroads around authenticity, artisanal and handmade techniques, even in national chains. Hand-scooped milkshakes and hand-breaded chicken at Carl's Jr. qualify, as do fresh-cut fries.

The return of butchery and nose-to-tail meat cuts and foraging, where municipal health departments permit it, are other developing examples she cited. Some restaurants, hospitals, and universities are growing some of their own produce, and advertising is promoting the farmers, growers, and fishermen who supply restaurant chains.

Finally, Kruse advised attendees to watch for sustainable initiatives. "No matter what your segment, there are multiple opportunities for you to tap into this phenomenon," she said.

Oil rises to above $93 as traders mull Europe

(AP) ? Oil prices rose slightly to above $93 a barrel Thursday in Asia as traders mulled whether concern over Europe's debt crisis justifies extending a sharp two-week sell-off.

Benchmark oil for June delivery was up 38 cents to $93.19 a barrel at late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.17 to settle at $92.81 in New York on Wednesday.

Brent crude for July delivery was down 15 cents at $109.60 per barrel in London.

Crude has plummeted about 12 percent from $106 two weeks ago amid investor worries that economic growth in the U.S. and China will slow more than previously expected. This week, political turmoil in Greece and growing anti-austerity sentiment in Europe have raised fears of a debt default and economic recession, which would undermine crude demand.

Some analysts say a slowly improving U.S. economy and signs of growing oil demand in developing countries should keep the crude price from collapsing further.

"A drastic weakening of sentiment brought oil prices down sharply, with sovereign debt fears a key element in a mounting loss of faith in economic, and hence demand, prospects," Barclays said. "Crude oil prices may well remain capped on the upside in the next few weeks by fears of major economic upheavals."

"However, given the actual economic and oil demand picture, Brent prices are more likely to remain protected around $110 rather than attempting to break through to a more extreme downside," Barclays said.

Should crude continue to fall or at least maintain the recent pullback, it should translate to lower prices for oil products such as gasoline, which would ease global inflation pressures and give policymakers more room to implement stimulus measures or loosen monetary policy to boost economic growth.

In other energy trading, heating oil was down 0.7 cents at $2.89 per gallon and gasoline futures slid 1.6 cents at $2.85 per gallon. Natural gas rose 2.7 cents at $2.65 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Sion player gets 8-match ban for slapping ball boy

    Associated Press Sports

    updated 12:29 p.m. ET May 15, 2012

SION, Switzerland (AP) -FC Sion midfielder Geoffroy Serey Die has been suspended for eight matches for slapping a ball boy in the face after his team was beaten by a relegation rival.

The Swiss Football League says its disciplinary commission acted after studying television pictures of the incident at a full hearing. Sion and Serey Die can appeal within five days.

Serey Die struck the young boy after Sion lost 1-0 at Lausanne-Sport on May 2.

Swiss media reported that the Ivorian player believed the ball had been returned to play too slowly.

Sion's defeat helped ensure it must play a relegation playoff against a second-tier team.

Sion was deducted 36 league points after lengthy legal challenges to FIFA, UEFA and Swiss football authorities.

Anti Aging Techniques For Personal Health | Healthy Glowing Skin

    Article by Jane Bristow

The anti aging industry is one of the largest industries in personal health and health care. There are so many new techniques and holistic approaches to anti aging which include fitness regiments and diet practices, supplements of hormones as well as cosmetics. The anti aging business looks at not only the effects but also the causes of aging in order to be able to tackle the problem and make people look fit, young and also feel fine and able. It is no wonder that as more and more people strive to combat the effects of aging and look forever young, the business potential of this industry in the US alone has exceeded fifty billion dollars per year.

The first area that must be tackled to counter aging is lifestyle. There are many lifestyle aspects that must be altered to counter aging. Habits like excessive drinking, smoking, lack of exercise and obesity, sedentary lifestyle or worry and anxiety are some of the most debilitating and harmful aspects of one?s lifestyle that accelerate aging. One has to have a game-plan and a strategy to counter these lifestyle barriers to aging, which would help in countering aging and make one fit and fine. With greater consciousness of this, it is not wonder that people are hitting the gyms or jogging tracks as well as joining fitness programs so that they may not look old.

There is also the free radical theory of aging which says that aging is accelerated by the free radicals which are due to the oxidation that takes place incessantly. Use of anti oxidants is thus touted to be the most effective way of anti aging. Use of vitamins A, C and E are seen to be widely used in the fight against aging. Sometimes, something as simple and basic as getting enough sleep could be quite effective in countering aging.

13 Qbs On Nfl Networks "top 100" Players...matt Ryan Must Be On That List

View PostTreason, on 15 May 2012 - 08:26 AM, said:

Atljbo - has also said Ryan not on it . I trust Tandy . She is on top of her stuff
Ryan deserves to be in top 100 . He deserves to be on list over Peyton and Vick based off last year play . I can care less about Tebow . He helped lead that Bronco team to playoffs and had a great game in wildcard . Ryan is better then Tebow but I can see why he made the list

If you are just looking at last year...then yeah. Ryan would rank ahead of both Vick and Manning. But I'm not sure that is what the list is really about. Even though Manning didn't play a snap in 2011...it doesn't change the fact that, as of today, he is a top 3 QB in the NFL. They aren't going to take him off the list because he had a surgery that prevented him from playing.

Now if 2012 shows that he isn't the same player, or the effects of it drive his level of play 'way' down, then we can discuss where he should rank on the 2013 list. But until that is known, I'm assuming he's going to perform at a very high level. He's probably one of the smartest QBs to ever put a helmet on.
