CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? NASCAR issued steep penalties against five-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson and his team for failing the first inspection for the Daytona 500.
Crew chief Chad Knaus was fined $100,000 and suspended six races Wednesday, car chief Ron Malec also was barred for six races, and Johnson was docked 25 points, sending him into this weekend's race last in the Sprint Cup Series standings.
The penalties stem from a failed inspection Feb. 17 at Daytona International Speedway. NASCAR said the No. 48 Chevrolet had illegally modified sheet metal between the roof and the side windows, an area known as the C-posts.
Hendrick Motorsports immediately said it would appeal, and Knaus and Malec can attend races during the process.
"Our organization respects NASCAR and the way the sanctioning body governs our sport," team owner Rick Hendrick said. "In this case, though, the system broke down, and we will voice our concerns through the appeal process."
Should the penalties stand, Johnson finds himself in a huge hole at the start of the season. He was wrecked just two laps into Monday night's Daytona 500, and his 42nd-place finish put him 42nd in the standings with two points.
The penalty drops him to 43rd in the field, with minus 23 points. He's now trailing Daytona 500 winner Matt Kenseth by 70 points, and is 58 points outside the top 10.
It comes after Johnson's worst season in NASCAR: his streak of five consecutive championships was snapped last year, and he finished a career-worst sixth in the standings. He also won only one race.
Knaus, meanwhile, has run afoul of NASCAR before.
He's been suspended four previous times, but had a two-race ban in 2005 overturned in the appeals process. His last suspension was for six weeks in 2007 when NASCAR said he had flared out the front bumpers of Johnson's car at Sonoma.
His first suspension was in 2001, as crew chief for Stacy Compton, because NASCAR said he had unapproved shoulder harnesses in the car. Knaus teamed with Johnson at Hendrick Motorsports at the end of that season, and the two have gone on to 54 victories and five championships.
Johnson has a 55th victory, the 2006 Daytona 500, which was won while Knaus was serving a suspension. Darian Grubb filled for that race.
Found them on a photolisting on AdoptUSKids a few weeks ago.
We also hope they will be placed with the right family, even if it isn't us.
This is the hardest part! I always want to pray for them to be matched to us, but then I have to stop myself and "correct" my prayer. I really want them to go to the best family. I just HOPE that family is US!
That seems to be moving really fast. I placed an inquiry about 4 weeks ago, and I'm going crazy. I want those kids more than any I've seen. I wish I'd hear something!
Genetics of endangered African monkey suggest troubles from warming climatePublic release date: 28-Feb-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

University of Oregon scientist says drill face increasing threats from both climate change and hunters
EUGENE, Ore. -- (Feb. 29, 2012) -- A rare and endangered monkey in an African equatorial rainforest is providing a look into our climatic future through its DNA. Its genes show that wild drills (Mandrillus leucophaeus), already an overhunted species, may see a dramatic population decline if the forest dries out and vegetation becomes sparser amid warming temperatures, researchers report.
Looking for clues amid 2,076 base pairs of mitochondrial DNA -- genes passed down along female lineages -- researchers discovered genetic signs that coincide with the conditions that mirror current climate projections for the equator around the globe in the next 100 years. Also examined were the region's fossil and pollen records.
"The drills went through a large population collapse -- as much as 15-fold," said Nelson Ting, a professor of anthropology at the University of Oregon. Ting is the lead author of a study placed online ahead of regular publication in the journal Ecology and Evolution. "This occurred sometime around the mid-Holocene, which was about 3,000 to 5,000 years ago."
Ting and 10 other researchers -- representing institutions in the United States, United Kingdom, Nigeria and Germany -- gathered feces of drills in the Cross-Sanaga-Bioko Coastal forests that stretch across portions of Nigeria, Bioko Island (Equatorial Guinea) and Cameroon. The extracted DNA provided the first genetic information from this species, which is found only in that region.
The species also is struggling for survival because of poaching and by habitat loss due to logging and cultivation activities. Drill meat also is a valued food; hunters often shoot them en masse. Protecting drill populations was the top priority of the African Primate Conservation Action Plan developed in 1996 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Despite the designation, Ting said, "hunting continues and is the much more immediate danger facing the drill."
The base pairs examined came from 54 samples of DNA. Base pairs are made up of adenine, thymine, guanine and cytosine. While DNA is the blueprint for life, examining the sequences of these chemicals also provides a roadmap into any organism's past. "Looking at its modern genetic diversity, you can infer changes in past population size," Ting said.
In the mid-Holocene, temperatures across equatorial Africa were hotter and dryer, with a reduction of forest cover that the drill need for survival. The ecology of the region also includes multiple other species found only there. The research, Ting said, is among emerging work focusing on past climate conditions in equatorial areas. Many studies have been done on conditions in both temperate and arctic regions.
The findings carry conservation implications, Ting said. "We could see many of these equatorial forests becoming very arid. Forest will be lost as vegetation changes to adapt to dryer conditions. Our findings show that this type of animal, which already is very much endangered because of hunters, would not be able to deal with the level of climate changes that could be coming."
What is needed to protect this little understood species are measures that reduce the destruction of the forest habitat and step up protection against poachers, said Ting, who is co-director of the UO's molecular anthropology group and a member of the UO Institute of Ecology and Evolution and UO Institute of Cognitive and Decision Sciences.
"Professor Ting's research is helping us push the boundaries of our knowledge about wildlife habitats through genetic studies of these rare and endangered monkeys," said Kimberly Andrews Espy, vice president for research and innovation. "The University of Oregon is a leader in developing new technologies for analyzing and mapping DNA in organisms and crops. Studying the genetics of these rare drill could lead to new approaches to conservation."

Marijuana, cannabis, chronic, dope, ganja, grass, mary jane, pot or whatever people may call it, is a non-synthetic substance that comes from the plant cannabis sativa and cannabis indica. It is legendary for its green color. During the 1800s the use and retail of marijuana were regulated by several states in the United States. In 1906, it was labeled as poison to prevent people from using it. By the 19020s, prohibition of the drug was entered in the constitution, and it was then repealed in the 1930s. Ever since, marijuana use continued to be illicit in the United States.
The plant is originally intended as a psychoactive drug. Our ancestors use them as a recreational drug and they use it for religious rituals as well. The use of marijuana is comparable to any other addictions such as alcohol abuse, cigarette, heroin and other drug exploitations. They have negative effects on man?s health. The most common effects of marijuana use are memory loss, lack of coordination and concentration, paranoia and poor judgment.
Many are hooked to the psychoactive effects of the plant. Its primary active component is known as the THC or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol. This substance is known to have a stimulant, depressant or hallucinogen effect. THC allows the brain to release its dopamine, a substance commonly known as pleasure chemical, giving the user a euphoric high. Euphoric sense is the main reason why people are getting hooked-up with marijuana.
Addiction in marijuana are often considered by many societies as a disease. Several groups considered marijuana users as outcasts. Thus, it lowers their confidence and morale towards self. Symptoms of addiction are loss of control over the drug and helplessness to quit regardless of the efforts exerted. Alongside with these symptoms, a strong urge of smoking marijuana is very common to the marijuana addicts. To chronic abusers, inability to smoke marijuana can trigger depression, anxiety and anger..
According to experiment, treating marijuana addiction is not easy. Experts figure that there are no discrete drug to treat this kind of addiction. Treatment is the combination of detoxification, awareness on the bad effects of marijuana to the body, support of friends, families and loved-ones.
Detoxification ? Many experts believe in this therapy. Detoxification usually includes healthy diet, regular exercise, increase water intake and for some, detox pills. The detox program is directed at the physical effects of marijuana. Rehabilitation on the other hand, is a long range goal so that the abuser will be completely free of the substance. The target of the program is lifestyle modifications.
Realization ? Many users are unaware of the bad effects of the marijuana to their physical, psychological and social being. Gaining knowledge on the harmful effects of marijuana can help chronic users to abstain from marijuana.
Ethical support ? As mentioned earlier, one reason why chronic users are having difficulty of quitting the drug and why relapses occur, is the lack of support from the people that surround them. Abusers need love, patience and special attention. Understanding will greatly help them in quitting the drug.
Many are addicted to marijuana use. Though marijuana use is illegal in the United States, it continues to be the most abused illicit drug in the most powerful country in the world. Aside from America, marijuana has been banned in many countries because of its various negative effects on man. In spite the prohibition, the abusers continue to grow. It is significant not to eliminate the importance of information dissemination about marijuana and other drugs so that people will not have to use it out of curiosity.
Individuals who are addicted to marijuana may experience symptoms which include anxiety, depression, feeling irritable, loss of appetite and changes in sleep patterns. Go to the links now to find out about marijuana addiction symptoms and take control of your life.

Nurses key in helping new cancer patients overcome fearsPublic release date: 28-Feb-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Diagnosis brings high levels of stress, raises existential issues
EAST LANSING, Mich. Often faced with overwhelming anxiety, patients newly diagnosed with lung cancer can find themselves in distress, and new research recommends nurses play a key role in alleviating concerns, leading to a better quality of life for patients.
A diagnosis of lung cancer the leading cause of cancer death in the United States brings with it high levels of stress and raises existential issues and death-related thoughts and concerns in patients, said Rebecca H. Lehto, assistant professor in the College of Nursing at Michigan State University.
In a paper published in the current edition of the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing, Lehto lays out several ways nurses can help bridge the gap between diagnosis and a strong psychological outlook during treatment.
"People facing life-threatening diagnoses often feel alone, and newly diagnosed lung cancer patients with early stage disease can have concerns about an uncertain future, the potential for treatment failure, the cancer spreading and the possibility of death," she said. "Health care providers, who are uncomfortable with and avoid discussing end-of-life questions, may contribute to a patient's alienation.
"Nurses who are comfortable with listening for and discussing existentially related concerns may be in a better position to promote the patient's psychological adaptation."
Too often, health care providers are solely focused on treatment and disease management, Lehto said. Her research identifies the types of death-related concerns that people experience and strategies to help resolve the normal but often distressing psychological responses in the early post-diagnostic and treatment period.
"With a nurse's help, if a patient can resolve the issues that impact quality of life during early treatment, it may greatly improve their outlook," she said. "It is difficult for patients to focus on learning about anti-cancer treatment if they are overwhelmed with anxiety and distressing thoughts."
Lehto said the biggest hurdle to overcome often is helping patients come to grips with the impact of the disease and the possibility of death on loved ones.
"Nurses first of all need to be a supportive, nonjudgmental presence," she said. "Patients are making life decisions and sometimes are making death preparations. Nurses can provide patient education materials and offer support in managing life affairs."
Other strategies include exploring life stories, discussing personal relationships and spiritual resources and helping patients locate resources to make funeral arrangements, update wills and other legal issues. Nurses can listen for patient concerns and focus only on personally relevant information so as not to further overwhelm them.
Lehto said the nurse role is essential despite concern that such discussions will increase psychological distress for patients.
"By addressing death-related concerns early, nurses will determine individualized needs for mental health or other supportive interventions or services," she said.

St Petersburg Pest Control
More Details about St Petersburg Pest Control here.
Termites are a terrible, terrible problem to have. They can severely damage your home or commercial property, and leave you homeless for weeks (not to mention terribly inconvenienced). But identifying them is one of the most crucial steps in this process. Often times identifying termites early can mean the difference between salvaging your property and declaring a loss or requiring serious renovations.
The first sign of termites will be swarms of them, flying inside your home, in an effort to colonize and bring more food to build a colony. Homeowners will be able to find termite bodies laying in droves, near window sills and doors, or wherever else there may be an opening so they can escape.
Hollowed wood is also a tell-tale sign of termites. Examine suspicious pieces of furniture to determine if it's been hollowed. You can usually feel for any areas that are not dense or seem lighter than usually. You may even be able to gently manipulate the wood with your hands, possibly even crumbling it. Sometimes hollowed wood actually has a certain sound that normal wood doesn't have.
Shelter tubes are a classic trademark of termites. They're pencil shape long narrow holes in the dirt near your home or in pieces of wood where termites burrow and colonize. You can also examine day-by-day to determine how quickly termites are colonizing in your home or business. Check moisture-prone areas of your home or business which is where termites congregate. Termites love moisture, so any areas of exposed wood that haven't been treated with water repellant coatings are particularly vulnerable.
Check for areas of your home that have dirt in unusual places. Termites typically leave trails of dirt as they travel to and from colonies in your home. This can also easily be confused with dirt that naturally collects on the wood near a window sill, a crevice in the wall, the corner of a bookshelf, or the corner of a room. This is where using your best judgment comes in handy, and where you can use some of the other criteria listed above to help you determine what is dirt and what is a paper trail of termite infestation.
Other clues for termites include spotting bugs or rotting wood inside your home or outside your home. These bugs don't necessarily have to be termites, but can provide clues that termites too, are near, as certain bugs don't discriminate on what they prefer to feast on.

Communication and collaboration technologies are evolving rapidly, and video conferencing technology is no exception. We recently published a revised Video Conferencing Vendor Landscape, covering seven video conferencing solutions, along with an updated Video Conferencing Strategy that covers making the case for video conferencing, selecting a solution, and tips for achieving maximum benefit for your organization with the implementation of your solution.
Traditional approaches to justifying video conferencing based on travel savings are still important, but many organizations are finding even greater value from higher quality and more frequent communication, as well as collaboration experiences that are enabled by a strategy for pervasive visual communication. In that spirit, traditional video conferencing vendors ? including both long-time players and newer arrivals ? have extended their expertise in room-based systems with desktop and mobile video communication solutions. Thus, while there are now many options for seamless HD video conferencing available, there?s also far more opportunity to take advantage of lower-resolution video interactions.
At the same time, newer players are rocking the boat when it comes to video conferencing infrastructure. The days of limited choices among a few high-priced hardware MCUs to enable multi-party conferences are behind us ? those devices are still available, and appropriate for some organizations, but newer, software-based approaches are emerging, with the potential to reduce both the cost of entry and the total cost of ownership for widespread video adoption. As well, when it comes to traditional room-based video conferencing systems, many vendors are promoting added-value opportunities such as digital signage and electronic whiteboarding: investments made in large, high-quality displays can improve communication and collaboration beyond when a video conference is in progress.
Whether through solutions directly from the video conferencing vendors, or through integrations with leading Unified Communications (UC) systems, it is important to look at the big picture before deciding on a specific solution. Consider how regular and reliable video conferencing ? including dedicated rooms and executive endpoints, desktops and laptops, or smartphones and tablets ? can improve communication across your organization, and with important business partners and customers, then use the vendor landscape to help select the solution that best meets your current and future needs, at the best possible price.
